This project aims at bringing forth the needs of a performance management system in the small and medium scale (SMEs) organisations. Generally, SMEs do not have a proper form of performance appraisal or a system of performance management. This is the reason why they are characterised by poor performances and low operational efficiency. The project tries to develop a performance management system for SMEs. Firstly it presents the aims and objectives of the paper. Then it goes on to present reasons for implementing the same in organisations, briefly describing the role of managers, employees and organisations in the system.

The research methodology explains the way research is conducted in the project. This includes the research philosophy, the research approach, the research strategy, and the methods of data collection. Having done this, the findings from the research are analysed and presented which also includes the barriers which were encountered during the collection of data. Finally, suitable suggestions are presented in the form of recommendations. This includes the design of a performance system, the management training program, a review of the management process and the implementation plan.

A proper system of performance management ensures that employees’ salaries and benefits are based on their performance. Moreover, it also helps to ensure that employees are rewarded according to their performance.The primary objective of the performance management system is to assist the SMEs to attain a greater standard of performance from its employees. It is also meant to assist the employees of SMEs to identify the skills and knowledge required for the efficient performance of jobs. It helps employees work towards the defined goals.

It is meant to ensure that the employees in SMEs are given feedback on their performance on a regular basis. Most importantly designing a performance management system aims at attaining the personal growth of each employee in the SMEs.
