Response The common element between both readings is that a space cannot be standardized as public or private. In fact, same space holds different meanings and significance for different people. While a perfectly private space for a heterosexual couple would be a room, it might hold the significance of a public space for a homosexual couple. Alternately, it is when the homosexual couple is on the streets that it might find it completely free from the suspicious and judgmental looks and comments of the people.

Likewise, the ideal male-dominated home created by Hefner in Playboy House is a fantasy for most men, but that dream house is indeed a public space in terms of outsiders’ accessibility to and visibility of it. I personally resonate with this shared theme of both the readings. The space has no meaning in itself; it is the situation, context, mood, and point of view that suggest whether the space is public or private. For me, my bedroom is quite public space even when I am alone in it because I am chatting to my friends online, skyping my siblings and cousins, or gossiping with a friend over the phone.

All night, I keep being updated on the latest tweets and posts by my friends on social networking sites by the cellphone updates. On the contrary, I often find peace of mind at such a conventionally public space as a park while sitting on the grass and feeling fresh cool breeze caress my skin and hair. Such peace is traditionally associated with private spaces .
