Herzberg Two-Factor Theory Due Herzberg Two-Factor Theory Herzberg developed the two-factor theory based on the attitudes of workers towards their jobs. The two factor theory states that workers value job satisfaction. Herzberg asserts that people like to work in fulfilling environments that offer good working conditions, remuneration, and avenues for growth, achievements, recognition and responsibility. Herzberg divided the theory into two basic factors; motivators and hygiene factors.Motivators include things that give people satisfaction and arise from the characteristics of the job.

They include aspects such as personal growth, achievement and recognition (Pride, Hughes & Kapoor 2013: 279). These factors motivate individuals and make them feel satisfied in the job. Availability of motivators enhances the productivity of workers and thus, managers should realize the importance of motivators in influencing the performance of workers. Hygiene factors are not job related. They do not bring satisfaction, but people feel dissatisfied when these factors are absent. The factors include salary, work conditions, work policies and fringe benefits enjoyed by workers (Nelson & Quick, 2014: 78).

Hygiene factors reduce the instances of dissatisfaction among employees. Herzberg insinuated that workers become productive when the environment around them is conducive.BibliographyNelson, D. L., & Quick, J. C., 2014, ORGB. Mason, OH: South-Western Cengage Learning, p. 78. Pride, W. M., Hughes, R. J., & Kapoor, J. R., 2013, Foundations of business. Mason, OH: South-Western/Cengage Learning, p. 279.
