PIPELINING: ENCOURAGE OTHERS THROUGH THEIR PROFESSIONAL PATHWAY- A GROUNDED THEORY STUDY Abstract This study was conducted using classic grounded theory.

Primarily, grounded theory is an inductive research methodology that derives theory from a systematic approach of comparative analysis of data. Pipelining explains basic behavior patterns that people experience in a new environment as they go through the learning process of their chosen career.

The pipelining process also enhances their decision making in daily responsibilities and stressful situations experienced later on in their career development. Pipelining is a holistic approach for engaging, maintaining, and sustaining values which impact individual and organization efficiency and mission accomplishment. The pipelining process consists of three major behavioral phases: selecting, journeying and extending. The selecting phase comprises strategies one uses to join a pipeline or move from one pipeline to another— individual engaging, mentoring engaging and organizational engaging are categories of the selecting phases; journeying comprises strategies individuals develop while traveling through the pipeline for success—individual transforming, mentoring transforming and organizational transforming are categories of the journeying phases; and finally, the extending phase consist of strategies, which develop the knowledge, skills and attributes learned in earlier phases, in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the career over a lifetime.

Individual stabilizing, mentoring stabilizing and organizational stabilizing are categories of the extending phases. Although this study was focused on lieutenants in officer basic training, the research has far-reaching application individuals pursuing career paths in other environments.
