Literature review (max: 500 words): A normal non-recyclable plastic bag, also known as polyethylene is the most commonly used carrier bag for shopping especially in urbanized areas. The usefulness of these plastic bags vary from their desirable properties such as low weight, durability and their convenience and re-usability advantages in packaging various food items and other small or big items. The greatest advantage however is that it virtually costs nothing for the end user i.e. the customer. These along with many other benefits, has lead to an increasing usage of these plastic bags in day-to-day activities. Plastics bags and their use tremendously impacts the existence of several entities such as Consumers, Manufacturers or Business, Environment, local authorities etc. (Cadman, et al., 2005). These bags choke sewer and drainage systems spoiling sanitation; generate litter, non-biodegradable garbage and marine waste (California Coastal Commission, 2006); and thus create un-aesthetic view of environment. Burning these bags emits poisonous dioxins and furans which are harmful when inhaled by living creatures and hence contribute towards air pollution (Ford, M. 2008). For consumers, there seems to be a certain motivation to use the plastic bags owing to the various advantages listed above. For businesses and manufacturers of plastic bags, these provide employment and livelihood. Nevertheless, considering certain serious repercussions which the use of plastic bags have on the environment, marine life (Wallace, N., 1985) and also on human beings especially in the long run has lead to the proposition towards a ban on the use of these bags worldwide and even a levy of fines towards non-conformance of this statute (Population Statistics, Wikipedia). Opponents argue that the substitutes of these plastic bags, such as paper bags are equally or even for more detrimental towards the environment given that the production of paper bags harm trees on a large scale. Hence, over a period of time, the issue of ban on use of plastic shopping bags have been a bone of contention in many a debate (The Hon. D.G.E. Hood, 2008) and still attract wide range of opinions and views both in favour of and against the ban of plastic bags. This research is being carried as one more attempt at assessing the various factors which determine the use of these bags and their impact on the choices made by consumers towards their ban. Consumers of plastic bags have been decided upon as major research participants rather than manufacturers as it would broaden and normalize the response rather than biasing it towards a specific response as would be the case with manufacturers who would unanimously oppose the ban. This research has a broad overall outlook of consumers towards plastic bags and is not confined to the study in a particular region and thus would gather responses through a survey open to consumers across various cities and counties, the varied the better.
