Through the years achievement motivated leaders have written a clear-cut, concise statement that creates a burning desire within them to find fulfillment in their work. These statements are referred to as purpose, charter, destiny, calling, or mission statements. They enable people to think beyond what they do in their careers. These statements enable people to discover who they are and what they most desire to become. We call these Mission Statements. A Mission Statement helps you to: *establish focus *create a desire to take action *stir the gift of greatness within *more fully realize your enormous potential *make a greater difference *see yourself as who you ultimately desire to be OLS 26300 – Ethical Decisions in Leadership is the perfect place to begin the creation of your Personal Mission Statement and Life Balance Goals. Ethical decision making is the very cornerstone of the Professional Mission Statement and may very well be the guiding principles of the entire document. As you progress through the OLS program of study, you will increase your knowledge, crystallize your beliefs and expand your skills. Therefore, you will keep modifying and perfecting your mission statement during the next few months and years. A mission statement should enable you to attain unsurpassed excellence, inspire you to lifelong honesty and ethical behavior, and serve as your continuous guidepost during difficult personal and professional times. Many leaders put their mission statement on their business cards, display it in their offices and/or keep a copy in their homes. The first step in writing your mission statement is to do some reflecting, soul searching, and imagining. This is often called harnessing the potential of your creative imagination and mobilizing allied forces of concentration. The sequence is: *Illumination *Fascination *Imagination *Discrimination *Destination *Determination *Domination *Culmination PREPARING YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT The first step in the process of developing a Personal Mission Statement is to outline your various roles in life and describe how you desire to be in each of those roles. You have roles in maintaining total well-being in your family, at work, with friends, in the faith community, in lifelong learning, and in your community. It is important to maintain “life balance” in these areas. How you define each of your roles is up to you. The life roles are in the left hand column and the question about how you would like to be described in each role is in the right hand column. Please complete this worksheet: My Life Roles In Seven Areas: How Would You Like To Be Described In This Role? 1. Spiritual Well Being I would like to be described as kind, caring, forgiving, Godly, loving. God is always described in such a manner that associates these character traits with Him. I would like to follow into the footsteps of Christ. He is always the father of all admirable virtues that many Christians would wish to embrace and be proud to be associated with Him. 2. Mental Well Being I would like to be described as intelligent, wise, and knowledgeable. I would wish to make informed decisions in my life. I would like to have that wisdom so that I can always have self-control as I make difficult decisions and tough and confusing choices in all aspects of my life. I also intend to achieve the highest ladder of the academic field. 3. Physical Well Being I would like to be described as physically fit. I do keep this dream by ensuring that I exercise, and also eat healthy. The physical well-being is a very aspect of life cycles as it cuts across all the roles that we play as human beings in the world. 4. Relationships/Family I would wish to be described as responsible, understanding, sociable, disciplined, status knowing, faithful, appreciable, adaptive, positive, contented, loving and caring. The relationships in the modern world are more complex. We engage in a highly volatile and delicate social field. There are new trends that have emerged such as the social net-works like face book, twitter .etc. This has led to the establishment of relationship[s of varied nature. However, these new relationship platforms have come with challenges. Distant relationships, online flirts and the rise of gays and lesbian right groups. Being a family man is my desire, ‘to be a good partner in my family. I wish to be associated with all such values that are core to an admirable relationships or a family. 5. Education/Career I would like to be described as per the education and the career to share in association with my profession. I am really proud of my career; it was my choice, the career I have yearned for since childhood. 6. Finances/Stewardship I would wish to be described financial stable or as a steward. Good future demands for one to be financially stable so as to be in a position to provide for oneself and other people who may in need of help. 7. Service/Philanthropy I would wish to be described as per the services that I shall have offered or I shall be offering to my clients, my family, my nation and to my friends at large. I would wish to be described based on the extent to which I am philanthropic. PERSONAL MISSION WORKSHEET After defining your roles in the seven areas, it is time to expand on your personal and professional role. The answers to the following questions may serve as the basis for the development of your mission statement: Who do I desire to become as an organizational leader? When I become an organization leader, I desire to be a dedicated team player. This is because the success of any organization significantly depends on the extent to which its employees work together as a team. That team spirit is just enough even though not on its own to move the organization forward. What do I desire for the members of my organization? I desire a good working environment for members of my organization. I would wish to see them working while highly motivated. A good working environment entails reasonable remunerations, better tools and equipment, proper lighting and ventilation among other important aspects of an attractive working environment. I desire to their rights respected and the due process of law in the follow up of their rights, just in case their rights are fringed on. How would I like to serve as an agent of change in my professional role? I would like to serve as an agent of change in my professional role by strictly following into the footsteps of my designed and well-articulated professional ethics. Professional ethics act as guidelines on how I should communicate, serve and relate with the customers of my company. Every profession in the world has either express or implied professional ethics. They as guidelines on how each professional should go about doing his/her work at the workplace. PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT WORKSHEET Some mission statements are as short as a sentence or two. The average mission statement is three to five sentences. The key is for you to rally own, be inspired by, and be excited about your mission. Remember that your mission statement will change as you change; grow as you grow, both professionally and personally. Draft Number One: To be a person of high integrity who upholds human dignity and dedicated to serve humanity with the humane virtues in him. To be an innocent human being who means no harm, intends no hard and one who wishes none harm. To be the best person and the person I have ever wanted to be. Draft Number Two: To be a service provider who serve his clients respect, and the due diligence they deserve. To be a hard working person in order to accomplish successes out of my own efforts Draft Number Three: To be a person of recognizable integrity, service to humanity and to uphold the dignity of mankind. LIFE BALANCE GOALS “Life balance” goals are immediate or short-range goals that enable you to make steady progress toward your professional mission. You must balance your personal, spiritual, family and recreational roles with your professional roles. During your life journey there will be on-going career goals to balance with the aforementioned goals. Answering these questions might help you find focus as you explore your life balance goals. How can I make the right decisions? How can I prioritize big tasks? How can I divide labor? How can I maintain health, fitness, and peace of mind? What can I delegate? What can I table or suspend for now? Who can help me attain life balance? Answering these questions and others will help “trigger” life balance goals. Remember, goals enable you to do more for yourself and others! Life balance Goals Worksheet: Start all Personal and Professional Life Balance Goals with the phrase I will…………..
