Section/# Praise and Motivation Defend the viewpoint that praise reduces intrinsic motivation. It can be argued from the readings that have been provided that excessive praise necessarily reduces the motivation of the recipient child. This is due to a complex number of psychological factors; however, it can most basically be understood as a function of the fact that the praise is gratuitous; i.e. given and received freely with no real reason or indication for why it is something out of the ordinary.

In this way, it comes to be something of an expectation – even a right. In this way, Defend the viewpoint that praise is an effective strategy. Conversely, some of the articles that have been reviewed talk about the positive means by which praise helps to build the self-esteem, courage, and awareness of the child. In such a way, the reader can quickly infer that the viewpoint with respect to praise being an effective strategy has merit within the realm of understanding and psychological applications as well.

What has been your experience giving and receiving reinforcement for your efforts? With regards to a personal experience, it has been the experience of this author that praise has played a vital role in establishing motivation and self awareness both within childhood as well as early adulthood. Ultimately, without such a function, it is doubtful that I would have been able and or motivated to achieve the same goals. Why do you think there are such different points of view? This invariable boils down to the fact that individuals have different approaches as to the ways in which early childhood development and education should take place.

How might biological and environmental factors affect the behavior of the child?Environmental factors will necessarily be visible in the way that children will seek to gain a level of reassurance based upon the environment that they experience. Conversely, biological factors with relation to the realities of the life that they life and whatever shortcomings of gifts they may have will also play an important role. How might these factors impact the effectiveness of praise? The overall effectiveness is of course impacted by these factors in that they will help to classify the level to which praise is understood, appreciated, and remembered.

For instance, in an environment in which praise is rare, one can readily understand how such an impact will translate to making its existence in a given situation be something of extreme importance.
