Number] On the Waterfront and The Front On the Waterfront is a 1954 American noir film. Noir filmswere typically American crime drama films that had a certain type of pattern with common themes and plots. They were usually made in the 1940s and 1950s with themes of crime dramas and thrillers (Conard 47). On the Waterfront was directed by Elia Kazan and the story was about union violence on the waterfronts of New Jersey. The crimes included corruption, racketeering, and extortion. It was one of the greatest movies ever made in American cinema and depicted the noir films with its typical camera placement, usage of light and shadow, and deep visual effects.

The story surrounds around Terry who struggles his way as he stands against his corrupt bosses (Kazan, 1954). On the other hand, The Front is a 1976 American comedy drama directed by Martin Ritt. This film represented the neo-noir films which were after the 1970s. This was a different genre than noir films as they were more updated in themes, styles, visualization, content, and media. This film was made in the age of live television and it focused on the Hollywood blacklist (Ritt, 1976). The story was rather more complicated and the film was overall ‘refined’.

The major difference between the two genres of films was the advancement in the camera techniques and tools and the social uprising in the society. Neo-noir consisted more about the complex political and social problems occurring from advancements in technology such as the television (Conard 32). Work CitedConard, Mark.
