The paper "The Concept of Emotional Intelligence " is a perfect example of a business assignment.   Emotional Intelligence (EQ) has become a common topic of many discussions among corporate executives. The most fundamental question should be what is the exact meaning of emotional intelligence and the significant role it plays in a business environment? Based on the business realm, Goleman (1998) defines emotional intelligence as an important ingredient for booming business careers. It is considered an important aspect in the business sector because it enhances group performance. Goleman also noted that self-awareness and regulation, motivation and empathy as well as social skills are the key components to the achievement of emotional intelligence. The case for Medrad, a medical devices company is a relevant illustration of how emotional intelligence plays a great role in the working places.

Although John Gardner, the Systems Engineering Manager at the company was recognized as the ideal staff with the needed technical skills to achieve results, it is quite clear that his senior management was frustrated with the manner in which he interacted with other people. This implies that John concentrated more on work completion and performance than recognizing the importance of other people’ s feelings.

On several occasions, John could be warned that unless he changed his style of leadership he would be fired. This clearly indicates that emotional intelligence is a crucial component of the management style in the organization. It seemed unbelievable situation to find that John, a System Engineer who could contribute amazingly to the overall performance of the Medrad Company was seriously warned that he would be fired due to his poor interpersonal style.

However, it is important to note that the senior management made a viable decision to involve John in a coaching and training program for Emotional Intelligence at the Institute for Health and the Human Potential. This is simply because the follow-up coaching and training enabled John to acknowledge Emotional Intelligence as an important competence that he was supposed to embrace in the past two years of his performance delivery at Medrad Company. Emotional Intelligence promotes good leadership styles. Northouse (2010) examined that relations-oriented leaders mainly focus on building close and interpersonal relationships to promote both social and emotional support.

Northhouse noted that such efforts make employees feel satisfied with their places of work. It is notable that only after John had acquired emotional intelligence skills that he could be considered for higher ranks of leadership at Medrad Company. The coaching and training on EQ were very useful to John because it made him realize his impact on other people in the company, and thus he could be able to identify the key gaps required of him to address in the course of his interaction with others.

For example, John admitted that emotional intelligence coaching and training greatly opened his eyes to recognize the significance of learning to react cautiously whenever he becomes frustrated.
