McDonald’ s is famous as the most successful organization using franchisees. These are individual businesswomen and men who invest and work in their own McDonald’ s restaurant. McDonald’ s Australia operates over 235 restaurants in Australia (Block et al. , 2004).
Despite the positive image, McDonald’ s has faced a backlash with regard to labour relation and treatment of its workers. McDonald’ s has been criticized for having little regard for the environment and treating its workers in the same manner. The policies of an organization can be a great frustration to workers if the polices are not clear or unnecessary or are applied selectively. Whereas workers will not have a great sense of satisfaction or motivation due the laid down polices, dissatisfaction can be decreased by making sure the policies are applied fairly and equally to all members of the organization.
Many copies of procedures and policies have to be processed and made available to all workers. Supervisors have to use positive feedback and put in place some form of evaluation that no employee feels victimized (Behson, 2010). The employees have to be compensated fairly for their input into the company. It is reported that employees at McDonald’ s are underpaid considering the amount of time they work. The employees are compelled to work in unsanitary and unhealthy work environments. People are very important to the success of any company.
McDonald’ s Australia has to carry out market research to determine to change consumer preferences and employees perceptions with regard to workplace satisfaction. This research proposal is set to investigate workplace satisfaction at McDonald’ s Australia within McDonald’ s restaurants and franchisees’ restaurants. Problem Statement The fast-food industry’ s economic power has not only enabled it to impact a radical shift in the eating patterns in the country but also fundamentally to transform the manner in which food is produced. The huge purchasing power manifested in the industry and demand for huge amounts of cheap animal products are some of the principles behind factory farming and government subsidies for staple animal feed crops such as soy and corn that sustain it.
Big multinationals like McDonald’ s make enormous profits selling fast food at prices that are artificially reduced. There are about 3.5 million fast-food employees in the US industry. They work for minimum wage devoid of medical benefits or the right to join unions. Employee turnover is high in the fast-food industry due to bad working conditions (Carrigan & De Pelsmacker, 2009).
McDonald’ s restaurant workers representing nineteen cities in the US complained to regulators that their working conditions can be described as hazardous and have caused severe burns from fryer oils and hot grills. The workers are lobbying for a $15 an hour pay and improved working conditions. Some workers have reported incidents of racial discrimination, wage theft, and backlash for trying to join unions. McDonald’ s has to be responsible for what goes on within its franchisees since it has an effect on its image and reputation. Some of the complaints are coming from franchised restaurants.
