Article Review College: Article Review The article by Belton and Dyrenforth “Civility in the Workplace” focuses on the need of respectful team behavior within the work environment. In a multi-stage process, they evaluate the employee understanding of the respectful work environment, its connection with worker performance and the way it can be sustained. This article is relevant to the contemporary work environment where work output and team performance depends on the employee behavior. In the 21st century, the managers are seeking strategies to develop cohesive work behavior in a strategy to inject efficiency within their organizations to overcome the business competition that is now becoming a threat to many organizations.

Therefore, this article is relevant and addresses a problem that is subject of interest in the modern business environment. It can help managers to learn how to understand the value of civil behavior and the strategies they can use to ensure that this behavior is sustained within their work environment. The article provides a strategy by which organizations can understand the employees’ attitude on their work environment. Belton and Dyrenforth (2007) identify that the best way to understand the employees’ definition of a respectful workplace is to gather their opinions.

The managers must gather the opinions of the employees by directly confronting them and asking them questions that can help understand their view on the issue. For instance, it is crucial to ask them what they regard as positive in their work environment. Such questions can also help them to obtain positive suggestions in which respectful behavior can be enhanced in the organization. Basing their argument of research makes the propositions workable and applicable in practical work environment.

It agrees with the work of many authors who have proposed that the best way to understand the employees is by creating channels which they can use to communicate with the management. A second key learning in this article is the value of sustaining civil behavior within the organization. Civil work behavior is manifested through development of positive work attitudes, teamwork, and close relationship between the employees and the management. Belton and Dyrenforth (2007) suggest that civil behavior is infectious in any organization.

Civil behavior can be spread infectiously from one team to another. The authors implemented this strategy by ensuring the each successful pilot site infects the rest of the facilities. The idea here is that civil behavior should be induced by way of example, where one department of a company becomes exemplary in conduct and performance. Since this method has worked previously, it is clear that the human resource managers can use this approach to induce positive behavior within their business organizations.

In conclusion, this article provides a strong ground from which the human resource managers can streamline civil behavior within their business environment. In the contemporary business environment, effective worker behavior is linked to optimal work output and organizational performance. Belton and Dyrenforth state that organizations can define work behavior by understanding the workers’ attitude towards conduct in the organization. Sustaining this behavior is also important for the human resource managers to benefit the organization.
