The paper "What Would Chick-fil A Do Differently" is an outstanding example of a business assignment. Chick-fil-A is a name that is well known in the American first food industry. This is a fast-food chain of restaurants that has its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. It specializes in chicken sandwiches among other fast foods. Chick-fil-A was founded in 1946 and has grown to have more than 1,679 restaurants across the United States. This establishment can be described as a religion business owing to the fact that its corporate culture is intertwined with the founder Christian beliefs, which in some quarters have been described as fundamental.
Other characteristics which make Chick-fil-A a religion business are: closing on Sunday, Christmas and Thanksgiving Day, their stand on the same-sex marriage and basing their argument on the Biblical teaching, conservative political activities which aim at defending Christianity and Biblical teaching (The Economist 2012). In the recent past Chick-fil-A has been in the news for the stand they have taken as far as same-sex marriage is concerned. The current President Dan Cathy made some remarks which rubbed the human rights and advocates of same-sex marriage the wrong way.
The fact that one nongovernmental organization which is locally known for its anti-gay campaigns is funded by the donations from this company also has not gone well with the people who support same-sex marriage. The activists and supporters of gays reacted angrily to the actions of this company calling for the boycott of the food chains owned by Chick-fil-A. This did not stop there, some of the business partners are known to have withdrawn their support from the stand that was taken by the company (The Economist 2012). Cultural awareness basically refers to moving away out of the normal ways through which were perceive others and getting to appreciate cultural values that are practised by others.
It does not necessarily mean practising other people’ s culture but appreciating that there exist other cultures which are different from ours as well as showing tolerance and respect. In a simplified manner, it is an acceptance of other people ways of life despite being different from own. This is usually encouraged in a multi-ethnic environment, where different cultures exist together.
Referring to the case study, this is the appreciation that there are people who have different ways of life and respecting their choice. Although Chick-fill-A has a right to model their business along with the Christian values, they also need to appreciate that they have customer across all avenues. There are those who share their line of thinking and on the other side, there are those who may be gays and have a different world view. Chick – fill-A ethnocentric attitude may not be the right way to approach some of the issues that touch on society.
The business owners in the sense of the matter have the right to oppose same-sex marriage but ought to do this in their own capacity as individuals and not on behalf of the business. Their stand on same-sex relationship and marriage offended other groups raising the question of whether entrepreneurs ought to mix their strong religious belief with their business activities (The Economist 2012).
