Career Investigation Choosing a career can be an extremely daunting task since every career has its own unique skills, attributes and qualities that individuals must have in order to pursue them successfully. For instance, being a successful dentist entails a lot. It goes way much from diagnosing and treating the mouth’s problems, as well as its internal structures (Qualities of a Health Professional, www.dentalschool.unlv.edu). Therefore, anyone who wishes to make a good dentist should have some of the following skills and qualities.

First, an individual should have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. This is because dentists are supposed to listen to the patient’s problems and concerns with empathy and interest. This gives them the opportunity to explain to the patients which problem they are suffering from using straightforward language that they can understand. Secondly, one needs to be patient in order to become a successful dentist. It is a fact that dentists encounter young and nervous patients, as well as old and infirm ones.

Therefore, a dentist should be composed, calm and collected in order to serve this people well. By nature, dentistry instills fear, hysteria and panic to some people; thus, it is the responsibility of the dentist to calm such individuals and assure that everything will be okay. This calls for patience and tolerance. Thirdly, successful dentists should have manual dexterity and the talent necessary for clinical accuracy (Qualities of a Health Professional, www.dentalschool.unlv.edu). This is because clinical dental treatment involves using sharp equipment in extremely small spaces.

Dentists normally operate on the mouth, an extremely small part of the body compared to the human hands. In most cases, they are required to focus their work on an extremely small part of the tooth. This calls for precision since a trivial mistake can lead to a serious problem (Hiremath 30). On the other hand, being a laboratory technician also calls for unique skills and qualities from interested individuals. Laboratory technicians perform day-to-day tests in both chemical and medical laboratories.

The tests range from basic drug tests to blood forensic tests. Laboratory technicians perform key routine functions that cannot be left for machines (Litherland). Therefore, there are certain qualities and skills that an individual should have in order to become a successful laboratory technician. First, an individual should be equipped with problem-solving skills. Something may go during a laboratory test, yet the doctor or senior medical personnel who requested for the test may not be around to give directions on what should be done next (Sood 150).

In this scenario, it is the obligation of the lab technician to think of solutions to the problem. Therefore, a fast thinker and problem solver can make a successful lab analyst. Lab technicians should also be keen to details. In as much as the lab tests can be routine and monotonous, the lab technician should pay extra attention to what is being done. This is because minor discrepancies noted forms the essential facts of the test. Lastly, lab technicians should have excellent writing skills (Sood 100).

This is essential since they are expected to construct reports of every research they conduct. Therefore, excellent writing skills facilitate writing high quality reports that can be for future reference (Litherland). The analysis of the skills and qualities needed to become a lab technician or a dentist has widely opened my eyes. The analysis gave me an opportunity to assess my personal skills and qualities. Since I have always wished to become a forensic analysis, which falls under a lab technician, I realized that I should improve on my writing skills.

Therefore, my efforts should be directed towards perfecting my problem-solving skills, and at the same time improving on my writing skills. Works Cited Hiremath, S.
