Case Study The Hersey-Blanchard model is exhibited in the case when Kevin calls the workers to discuss something so that the decision making process could be conclusive and be acceptable by all employees. This model maintains that no single leadership style is best. On the other hand, the Vroom Jago model is also exhibited when a dispute emerged as the employees could not agree on who should go for vacation at a specified time implying that Kevin would have to make the decision alone. Since the employees could not agree on the way forward, Kevin would have to make the decision on their behalf.
Although he had already chosen to involve the group, which is also part of the Vroom Jago model, he is left with the opinion of making the decision because the employees could not agree on it. According to these models, the most appropriate leadership style is the participative one. This is because all members have the chance to contribute and affect the outcome of a decision. This would improve job satisfaction for the employees as well as their motivation levels.
Prior to his experiment, Kevin used the authoritative or the telling leadership style. In this style, the leaders pass directions to the employees and do not encourage contribution of ideas or questioning regarding the directions given. In this style, the leaders not only give directives but also show the employees how to do the task. During the experiment, Kevin uses the democratic or the participative style. This style encourages the creation of relationships between the leader and the employees. This is made possible through working closely with the employees and assisting them.
Moreover, the decision making capabilities are shared equally where everyone has a say in the final outcome. Consideration of ideas motivates the employees. Kevin exhibits this when he decided to involve the employees in the decision making process. If I were Kevin, I would assess the situation closely and conclude fairly. Since the employees have already given me the go-ahead to make the final decision concerning the issue in dispute, vacation dates, I would decide it according to my own knowledge of what would be best for the employees.
I would settle on giving priority to employees according to productivity. This is because it would not only be fair but also improve performance in the organization. It would be fair to ensure that all employees, regardless of level, are considered equally in the vacation decision and not giving priority to senior employees who have priorities in other aspects. On the other hand, if this would be determined according the productivity, it would spark a sense of competition among the employee as they seek to be awarded the vacation at the time of their choice.
I would also ensure that the employees get used to participating in most decision making processes because it is one of the best ways of improving employee productivity and overall performance of the organization. However, when the organization has a deadline to beat, I would balance the participative method with the authoritative one since there would not be enough time to consider contributions from the employees. As long as there is a good relationship between the employee and myself, the employees would understand all actions taken and support the organization in its entirety.
