The paper "Retrolair - Management in the Purchasing Function" is an outstanding example of a business case study.   The purchasing function in an organization is essential, especially in inventory management. Conflicts in organizations involve disagreements among employees or organizations departments and can be positive or negative to organization operations. The issue in Retrolair Aerospace Company between employees and the organization department also represents human resource issues that may exist in an organization. According to Monczka (2010), purchasing function ensures that organization purchasing and distribution operations link tactical goals and objectives to strategic goals and objectives through an operational plan.

Operational plans provide a description of any possible challenges, requirements for success and illustrate portions of the plan that will be used over a given period of time. It is up to the purchasing manager to stabilize the purchasing function and create links with other departments for a well-operating organization. The essay explains the problem of employee and departmental conflicts as a result of communication and human resource management strategy. This essay also illustrates an operational plan for the purchasing function that will be used to attain the required growth in the civil side of the business.   Retrolair Aerospace Company Conflict Conflicts in the aerospace industry can never be avoided.

Contracts are the basis of the daily conflicts in the aerospace industry. Causes of the conflicts can be related to inappropriate contracts and unpredictable incidences that could not be predicted at the signing of the contract. However, company reputation needs to be preserved and also contractor-client relationship needs to be maintained for future business purposes (Longstaff, 2012). For this reason, conflict resolution strategies like mediation serve well than court proceedings.

An example is a conflict within Retrolair Aerospace Company among employees in the purchasing function and other organization functions. Conflicts are positive if maintained at healthy levels within the organization since it triggers competition and a healthy workforce. Parties in this conflict include all employees, the management and organization departments especially the purchasing unit. Major parties will be workers who engaged in a fight at the canteen. In this case, study mediation of the conflict is between parties and employees of the organization who were involved in the fight at the canteen.

There is also a need for conflict resolution among team members of the purchasing function and among organization functions. The conflict is as a result of Retrolair aerospace Company loss of a large lucrative defence contract to its rival. The loss has resulted in conflicts since changes must be made within the personnel unit of the organization through dismissals. Being a viable contract makes it enforceable by law by the party to which the contract is awarded. However, this issue moves further to affect the operation of employees in Retrolair.

Any of the parties that feel aggrieved. However, mediation can help both parties resolve the conflict by getting to understand each other, the causes of the conflict and measures to avoid any repeated mistakes. Mediation helps parties that need to preserve their relationships as it enables the resolution of conflicts while keeping the relationship between parties (Lovenheim& Guerin, 2012). It is important for relationships to be maintained for the sake of teamwork in Retrolair especially as the organization is facing the challenge in supply chain and human resource wing.

Determining the nature of the conflict and the issues surrounding it is the first step towards resolution of the conflict. Pointing out conclusions of judgment is easier based on the feelings of the parties; however, the goal of arbitration will be ignored in this case. Focusing on the roles for each party and the extent of their performance will help the mediator to understand the situation and formulate the appropriate advice for the parties. The mediator, however, is supposed to employ mediatory qualities (Cooley, p.35) and needs to have full knowledge of the major issue surrounding the conflict in order to establish the strong and weak points of both parties so as to achieve the goals of mediation.
