In this case, good leadership and management can be achieved through the provision of key resources that are used for service provision which include; finances, marketing, procurement and human resources. Thus, there is need for synchronizing management and leadership in order to achieve success in any organization. Moreover, leadership and management in most cases go hand in hand however, they are two different issues. Hence, leadership and management are necessarily linked and they do complement each other. This paper therefore aims to distinguish between leadership and management and in reference to Angus Thirlwell’s organization leadership and management perspectives during his tenure as the CEO of Chocolat hotel and an in-depth analysis of various management and leadership theories. Indeed effective management leads to good leadership. Leadership and management description Management is as a process which ensures the functionality of an organization it is attributed to enabling an organization hit its quarterly numbers and making it achieve its goals. Besides, management is all about planning, staffing, budgeting performance measurement, budgeting and problem solving in cases where the results do not go as anticipated (Bunker and Wakefield 2010, p.12-13). On the other hand, leadership is the alignment of different people within the organization to the organization’s vision and mission. Thus, it entails inspiration communication motivation and buy-in. In addition to this further description of management can be drawn from the saying ‘managers maintain where as leaders develop’. In this case, managers ensure that there is a conducive environment within the organization as well as ensuring that everything are in place to foster the organizations success (Antonakis, Avolio and Sivasubramaniam 2015, pp.261-295). Leaders according to this saying are the individuals who bring about new ideas and strategy which could be used to draw in some level of success within the organization. Besides, managers are more focused on the organization structures and systems in ensuring that they are aligned to triggers of success within the organization. Also, leaders tend to focus more on people where they try to get the best from them in order to achieve bring the best out of them which in the long end will foster the organization success (Cyert 2012, p.29-38). Managers also tend to rely on control by providing a sense of direction to the organization workforce whereas leaders inspire trust through bringing the best out of the organization workforce. Biography Augus Thirlwell is the founder and CEO of Hotel Chocolat however, he attributes his success in this business to the passion that he has on chocolate. He claims that he had two specific aims behind the creation of this business which was to excite the senses and to ensure that the chocolate product was relatively available. Angus passion for his business is evident through how he claims to religiously taste the chocolate and approve the company’s chocolate recipes and perfecting on them. In addition to this he also claims that his live either revolves on the company’s board room or the cocoa trees. On the other hand, Angus’ passion as the CEO of Hotel Chocolat is also evident through the fact that growing cocoa was quite a bold move. The success of Hotel Chocolat is also attributed to Augus’ ambition in creating a world’s leading destination of Chocolate brands. This ambition by Augus bore fruits having that the company has an estimated 81stores , 2 flagship hotels as well as an estimated 167 million dollars floated in the stock market. Augus as a leader has led and managed this company through prioritizing on communication before deciding how he would put out the word to his company’s workforce. In this case, Augus purports that he learnt the art of ensuring that they are one step ahead of what he as a leader is telling his company’s workforce. In an interview Thirlwell claimed that this leadership strategy was borrowed from the valuable lesson that he got in the Caribbean from his late night chat with Filby the man behind the mastermine of DFS;s IPO a year back whom he got a lot of insight on business from (Bunker and Wakefield 2014, pp.14-15). On the other hand, Thirlwell, also leant on the importance of valuing and thinking about the future. However, he also claims that leadership enabled him to be able to contextualize this insights and vision on the future. He states that he was able to talk to his organization’s employees on things regarding the organization and roles and relating to them quite effectively which greatly fosters the business development and growth (Bunker and Wakefield, 2010, pp.12-13). Additionally, Thirlwell asserts that those who are not used to his leadership strategy find him a little nuanced due to his contextualization of his message to his organization workforce. However, he argues that this has enabled these organization workforce personnel to relate with his way of thinking, therefore, ensuring that in implementing these strategies they are also quite effective (Turcotte, 2014, pp.46-48). Thirlwell’s leadership position as the CEO of Hotel Chocolat has enabled him adopt an exuberant, talkative and friendly nature in his line of work. He claims this is because, as a leader he is often in interaction and in close proximity with other people lives therefore, he is forced to transmit his goals and vision for his company through the organization’s personnel. Besides, Thirlwell also claims that his leadership position has enabled him embrace innovation which he attributed to be behind the launching of the refreshing packs of mints as a concept that replaced pen hand outs by companies (Yukl, 2012, pp.66-85). Additionally, he also points out that innovation which is inclined to leadership also led him to spot the niche where gifts options were limited to flowers only a concept which he used to create a online retail company which went hand in hand with the current technological boom, this particular company would send chocolate as gifts through post and idea that got a huge reception in the gift items market (W. Forndes, 2015, pp.3-6). As a leader, Thirlwell also claims that he also looked for ways in which he could improve his company’s business model and the same time tap on the potential of his company’s workforce. He claims that he ensured that the right philosophy was embraced within the organization as well as the right skills, machinery. Thirlwell claims that he embraced a recipe for his chocolate gift products which reduced the sweetness as well as add a few cocoa nips into the chocolate product moreover he also claims that he added a couple of stripes on the chocolate to make it more appealing to the customers (Staunton, 2015, pp.24-26). Measure of leadership Thrilwell could be measured as a leader through his ability to pin point the next chapter of his business success. In this case, most leaders are visionaries and have a rare ability of sing ahead on what is likely to happen and how they can improve their organization and create and conducive environment within the organization that guarantees success (Bush 2017, pp.563-565). Thrilwell has already identified three main key areas of investment that are a crucial part to next chapter of his organizations’ success. These areas include; strengthening, streamlining and professionalizing the organizations business. In this case, Thrilwell is planning in building store portfolio in an effort to increase the organizations supply chain. In an interview Thrilwell states that going forward the organization is on the verge of entering ‘the digital year’ phase, in this case he claims that Hotel Chocolat should be ready to embrace the profit generating reserves into the organizations online operations (Oliveira, 2014, pp.5-7). Another method to help measure Thrilwell’s leadership is to review his competencies. In this case, during his tenure as a leader in the company he has managed to spearhead the expansion of his company in multiple foreign markets . In this case, he recently claimed in an interview that the company is the process of expanding into any susceptible market that allures Hotel Chocolat. One of the main achievements of Thrilwell, in regards to expansion is opening a store in London’s Borough market. In this particular store, it is claimed that Hotel Chocolat provides an outdoor comfortable terrace experience to its customers (W. Forndes, 2015, pp.3-6). Opening this store in London is considered a great success for Hotel Chocolat due to the artisan chocolate makers start-up located in this particular area. In an interview while opening this particular store Thrillwell claimed that this store was a great success for the Company since Borough market brought the feeling of reality to the company’s cocoa products (Müller et al., 2017). The other method to measure Thrilwell’s leadership is to review his passion for his company as well as entrepreneurship nick. In this case, his passion in business is evident in the manner he built the company from scratch to its current global status (Turcotte, 2014, pp.46-48). Evidently entrepreneurialism runs in Thrilwell's family’s blood. History shows that his father Edwin Thirlwell founded, KallKwik and the Mr Whippy ice-cream brand which performed relatively decent businesswise. Thrillwell is therefore claimed to have borrowed his entrepreneurial spirit from his father and drawn his inspiration form the bit of success that his father achieved in his earlier business journey (Oliveira, 2014, pp.5-7). Thrilwell also acknowledges that having his father’s wisdom close to him throughout his business journey especially while starting off was quite important to his success in business since he often consulted him in a number of issue due to his reach experience and knowledge in business. Leadership that factually contributed to Thrilwel’s performance in his organization One of the factual contributions of Thrilwell to the organization is building it from scratch to a globally recognized company. In this case, Thrilwell’s leadership relies on behavioral theory which has enable him to take an estimated 23 years for him to build the company and ensure its success which it is currently known of. He was faced with a lot of challenges especially in growing cocoa which he admits that it was rather hard but through persistance and passion he finally managed to succeed in building his own venture and bringing a sense of satisfaction from giving a lot of people a source where they are able to earn an income. The other factual contribution of Thrilwell to the organization is flexibility. In this case, Thrilwell embraced contingency theory when starting off this venture by leaving employment where he was working in a tech company and starting his business venture in a Mint Marketing Company, the company was selling branded mints as gifts to corporate (Staunton, 2015, pp.24-26). However, after a number of inquiries by customers on other gift products Thrilwell decided that the company needed to be flexible, a move which led them to adopt Chocolates as their gift products. The company later on renamed to Choco Express where it diversed it business model through embracing flexibility through selling Chocolates online (Yukl, 2012, pp.66-85). Conclusion Angus Thirlwell is an evident example of an entrepreneur who has embraced both leadership and management in his business model. In this case, Thrillwell’s journey shows that he tried to strike a balance between management and leadership in his effort to grow and develop his business. This enables his business to diversify and become flexible depending on the market trends and the customer needs and also adopt a number of strategies which has fostered the organizations overall success. Therefore, it is evident that leadership and management are both essential for an organization’s ultimate success. References Antonakis, J., Avolio, B. and Sivasubramaniam, N. 2015.
