Introduction: The debate is on the topic of employment at will and it has been covered by both the teams in a professional manner. One team agrees with employment at will concept whereas the other disagrees with the employment at will concept as one feels it is not a good social policy and it could hurt the society instead of providing the social freedom whereas the other team feels vice versa. The strengths and weakness of what both the presented have been discussed below: Strengths of team 1: DISagreeing with employment-at-will is good social policy Research has been conducted and evidences have been shown that employment at will is not socially beneficially for a country.

As results of employment at will in different parts of the world have been discussed like because of employment at will, salary growth rate reduced, unemployment rate increased, GDP reduced and higher temporary employments were produced. So it is one of the strengths to disagree with employment at will. With employment at will it has been explained that discrimination increases in the country. Research regarding increase in employment discrimination cases has also been discussed as it has been said that employment discrimination cases increased by 2,166% because of employment at will.

Also it has been mentioned that one out of every seven cases in court is related to discrimination of employees. Different laws and acts have been discussed that are related to employment at will and they claim that it is not favorable for the economy. One of the major strengths of the debate is that the topic has been covered from different perspective of an employee and employees could be dismissed for any reason. An employer could dismiss a pregnant woman for missing time to give birth to the child or a old man to avoid giving of retirement benefits etc.

therefore the debate covered different and important aspects from the perspective of an employee. weaknesses of team 1: DISagreeing with employment-at-will is good social policy Although the debate covered several strengths, but it had some weaknesses as well and one of the major weaknesses is that the perspective of an employer has not been discussed in detail. As employment at will could be harmful for the employer if an important employee leaves the organization at any point of time. With employment at will employees could leave the organization at any point of time, regardless of on how much important project they might be working and this could hurt the employer or the organization drastically and in turn it could affect the country’s image and GDP.

Therefore such points should have also been covered. The attitude of employees could become non-serious and unprofessional towards the job if an ideal employment at will situation is created because they know that they can leave the organization at any point of time without any issues. strengths of team 2: agreeing with employment-at-will is good social policy The debate covers and explains different discrimination laws and tries to make a point that discrimination and employment at will are two different things.

One of the important aspects of the debate is that it says employees should also have the freedom to join any organization and they should be allowed to select in which kind of environment they would like to work. Debate has been supported by several laws and acts and also OCED report which claims that flexible labor markets would help in creating more jobs and growing the economy at a faster pace. The other strength of the debate is that it covers the benefits of an individual like the individual could choose the kind of bosses with which he wants to work, and he can negotiate with the current employer to have higher salary.

Also other benefits of an individual like not paying union fees, have lower strikes, encourages merit based employment and promotions etc. weaknesses of team 2: agreeing with employment-at-will is good social policy If the team supports that employment at will is a good social policy then they should have provided some kind of research other than the airline industry as the other team has provided by giving references of increase in discrimination cases. There should have been some evidences to support employment at will from different parts of the world as the other team covered the situation in Europe where because of employment at will, there was a decrease in GDP, an increase in unemployment, increase in temporary jobs and a reduction in salary growth.

conclusion Employment at will encourages employees and favors them more in comparison to employers. However it is important to have a balance between the flexibility that the employer has as well as the employee has so that no one can dominate over the other.
