SKILLSWhen I was asked to demonstrate connecting a hose coupling using the technique I learned from training, if noticed that WORKING INDEPENDENTLY and producing significant results enhanced my capabilities.

I believe I can cope more effectively with the challenges, becoming less dependent, and can control outcome of activities that is important to me. I experienced an increasing sense of competence through finding opportunities to accomplish tasks. It allows me to determine goals and the means to achieve them, and seek opportunities for a more challenging work.

Working independently makes me learn to managed myself and deal more effectively with materials, information, and organizational processes. I learned to work with minimum professional assistance and it makes me take the initiative to do diagnose needs and locate resources. In training, I learned to use TASK MANAGEMENT skills when my supervisor asked me to demonstrate how to ventilate a pitched roof. I was given five minutes and was asked to perform my task with 100 percent accuracy. I was nervous at first since this is the first time that I have managed a complex task on my own.

However, the ability and confidence I learned from working independently encouraged me to continue and aim to complete the task. Consequently, I prepared myself and study the situation from every angle. I need to handle my task safely and effectively, and be aware of the situation at all times. In my mind, I contemplate of the task at hand and prioritize them. I carefully executed each segment of the task and completed it in less time. Conflict between team members can become destructive when the disagreeing parties do not handle their differences effectively.

Conflict between us challenges our beliefs, decisions and priorities, and this is not good particularly when we have a very important task to do. At the individual and team level, I am aware that conflict such as this should be managed so that its effects would not be destructive but positive and productive. This situation is my leadership’s crucial challenge and this is the first time during the training that I have to resolve in my capacity, a conflict in my team.

I need to explore the members differing viewpoints while avoiding the hazards of polarization. Using effective communication and listening to their views, I tried to manage and DEAL with the CONFLICT to reconcile the team. I started talking about the issue while avoiding touching on personalities. Listening, developing and considering options while occasionally defusing the tension with a joke or change of agenda. Lastly, I asked the team to jointly seek alternative ways of finding a solution. EXERCISING my RESPONSIBILITY at times when my supervisor assigned a critical task of checking and organizing our fire fighting equipment resulted to a favourable outcome.

The task encouraged me to take as much responsibility for my own learning and given me confidence and the ability to face new challenges. It increased my motivation and became more focus on the task. It gave me a sense of responsibility to monitor my own behaviour not to take advantage of my autonomy at work.
