Environmental cues can have an impact on the expectation for communication as they influence the willingness of people to act and intervene when it comes to communicating (Lindenberg and Steg, 2007). Environmental cues often trigger significant reactions out of people and encourage them to behave in a certain way and respond in particular ways. Environmental cues directly influence behaviour which then influences the expectation for communication. A02. A communicator is responsible to the audience as they are required to create a communication climate that fosters caring and mutual understanding (Bovee and Thill, 2008). Communicators are expected to examine their attitudes, beliefs and values by interacting with others in order to blend well with the beliefs and attitudes of the audiences. Communicators have the responsibility of presenting dynamic relationships that audience can gasp (Bovee and Thill, 2008). On the other hand, audiences have responsibilities towards the speakers. The success of a speech is dependent on the audiences. A speech is considered a participatory endeavour that requires the contribution of both the speaker and the audience (Bovee and Thill, 2008). The audience is supposed to pay attention, answer and ask questions, respond and evaluate the speech. A03. Thoughts can have some influence on the use of language. Language is termed as the system of symbols, gestures and signs used to communicate thoughts (Steels and Belpaeme, 2005). Often, thoughts magically come to us while we are communicating. These thought may influence how we communicate. Expanding the ability to think often expands the power of language (Christansen and Kirby, 2003). This is evident in children as their development of language goes hand in hand with their thinking. The expansion of our thought can enable the increase in words in the language vocabulary. A04. Human beings perceive things through the five senses. Language is a complex process that has tremendous power (Thorson, Korccok and Steller, 2013). This power suggests that language influence our thoughts and self-concepts. The influence of language on self-concept is so great and can even alter the perception of the dimension of time (Bell and Dayle, 2010). For instance, the Hopi tribe in America lack past tense for verbs which alter their perception the dimension of time as they may not be able to think about the past. Hopi tribe focuses on the present time since that the only time they can relate to (Bell and Dayle, 2010). Also, language in bilingual people affects self-concept. The language use of bilingual people shapes they think of themselves. A05. The article I analysed consists of an introduction, body and conclusion. It also has an attention statement and a residual message (Laszlo, 2003). The article has a headline and a heading that captures the attention of the audience. The attention statement in the article successfully captured my curiosity to continue reading. The introduction of the article entails clear statements that the audiences can relate to and explain why the message portrayed is important (Bell and Dayle, 2010). It also highlights what is in the body and lays out the arrangement of the body. The introduction also explains why the topic is important. The body of the article starts with a topic sentence then the supporting sentence and then the concluding sentence. This arrangement allows a clear flow of information and transition. This guides the readers from one point to the other. In addition, the conclusion summarizes all the main points included in the body and offers a number of recommendations. This reminds the audiences about the main ideas and conveys a sense of accomplishment. The article has organised ideas in such a way that the audience are able to remember and retain the main ideas. A06. Doublespeak is the utilization of words and phrases to cover, obscure or change meaning (Bell and Dayle, 2010). In bureaucratic communication, it serves to cast a person in an unfavourable light. For instance, in the army, “collateral damage” is used to mean civilian death. In addition, “genocide” may be referred to as “ethical cleansing” which is considered less deadly. Doublespeak can be justified as it changes or switches words to made unpleasant situation sound less awful (Bell and Dayle, 2010). For instance, people often say that a person has “passed on” rather that a person has “died”. This assists in making a situation less awful. In addition, the use of doublespeak is justified as it is used to sound more polite, politically correct, for business purposes and to hide negativity (Bell and Dayle, 2010). Although the use of doublespeak in communication can lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation, in some situations, it is justified. A07. Examples of signposts used in the article I researched include “for one thing”, “in addition”, “for instance”, “also”, “therefore”, “in contrast”, “finally” and “for example”(Aras and Crowther, 2012). These signposts make the article more readable. It shows the flow of ideas and points. Use of signposts allows ideas to follow a logical order that create a flow. The ideas in the article flow well and make it obvious to the ready about the flow of points. The signpost in the article shows how the main ideas build on the thesis statement. They give information as to whether information is an example, an additional point or is a contrast to what has been mentioned (Bell and Dayle, 2010). A08. I have chosen writing from a book on fashion design. Some of the terms described include fashion design, haute couture, ready-to-wear and mass market (Hebrero, 2015). Fashion design is termed as the application of natural beauty and aesthetics to clothing and accessories. Haute couture is the fashion clothing that is designed on a made-to-measure basis with high-quality expensive fabric (Hebrero, 2015). On the other hand, ready-to-wear are clothing made in small quantities, rather expensive are presented during fashion week period. Mass market is seasoning clothing that caters for a huge number of customers with trends from famous fashion names (Hebrero, 2015). In order for readers to understand, the writer has explained the meaning of the jargon words with simple language. He has presented some of the terminologies with pictures and examples. A09. My self-concept is all about the aspect of image and esteem. My self-concept often influences how I communicate with people (Thorson, Korccok and Steller, 2013). The ability to think about why, what and how is very important to interpersonal communication and writing (Huitt, 2011). Part of the self-concept may be that I express myself through writing and texting. Self-concept assists in understanding myself and others and learns new things (Wechsler and Bell, 2006). Self-concept is made up of two important concepts; self-image and self-esteem. Self-image is how you describe yourself while self-esteem is how an individual feel about himself. Both self-esteem and self-image influence how I communicate particularly how I write. When communicating, my self-concept pays a fundamental role (McLeod, 2008). When I view myself as someone capable of writing and communicate, I have an easier time doing so and I become a good writer. A10. Psychology offers the concept of self-actualization which is considered as the growth of a person towards the fulfilment of the things that are important in life (Thorson, Korccok and Steller, 2013). In psychological context, self-actualization is the reaching of one’s full potential and the feeling of some degree of control and empowerment. As an individual progress beyond self-growth, his human curiosity about the world emerges (Schacter et al., 2011). Psychology offers some freedom to explore and discover the world around us. Self-actualization is able to enhance the psychological needs of the individuals. According to the field of psychology, reconstruction of one self is possible through self-expression and recognition of the things surrounding us (Schacter et al., 2011). The field of psychology offer the chance to develop highly creative people who are experienced and have the ability to control and enhance their lives. A11. The process of perception tends to limit our views. Perception is considered a complex process (McCreery, 2006). We often select what to attend to or view based on our perception. Perception influences what we pay attention to, what we remember and how we interpret communication (Siegel, 2005). How we perceive things is determined by a number of factors unique to an individual. Ones point of view is his or her perception of concept from experience or understanding and is unique in that it is influenced by factors such as race, physical characteristics, physical environment and social class to name a few (Siegel, 2005). Perception entails selection, organisation and interpretation of ideas and stimulus. This means that how we select and interpret the world influence our perception. A12. There are four listening styles including time, people, and action as well as content. Good communication can come with listening ethically. It is important to create a climate of mutual understanding and respect in order to ensure effective communication.
