Using the right leadership style is very important for organizational development. Business leaders should always be sober and analytical when deciding which type of leadership style to employ. They need to choose leadership style that greatly favors the needs of other people in an organization rather than those that favors them. Murray (2012) argues that leadership is not about fulfilling personal needs. It is about meeting the needs of individuals being led in an organization. Murray (2012) suggests several leadership styles that can be employed in several situations and demand.

These leadership styles include visionary, coaching, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and commanding. The visionary type of leadership is suitable when a company is looking for a new direction. The main goal of this leadership style is to direct organizational members towards new goals. The Coaching style of leadership directs employees on performance improvement and assists them in linking their goals with that of the organization. Affiliative leadership concentrates a lot on importance of working together as a team and on developing harmony among organizational members. The democratic leadership style works well in a situation where the direction that an organization needs to take is unclear and the leader wants to incorporate group members’ wise decisions and ideas.

The commanding or the military style of leadership is the most commonly employed. It is however the least effective style of leadership.
