PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT By Name Course Instructor Institution City/State Date Personal and Professional Development 4.1 Problems in My former Workplace Freeloaders: Basically, freeloaders are part of the many challenges I encountered in my former workplace bearing in mind they lower work efficiency. One of my coworker's had a deprived work habits that influenced my overall job performance, even when I tried to explain politely to him how his activities was influencing me he never changed (Lallukka et al., 2011, p.205). It became hard since it was my supervisor’s responsibility to manage this kind of workplace behavior. My coworker had the power to assign work to me, since he was my boss I could not say "no" to his demands to carry out their tasks. I tried to focus on being an excellent member of staff, but I always fell into his deprived work habit. Another setback that I endured is: most of my former coworkers created an obnoxious work environment. I tried keeping away from them when possible, being lovely when working as teamwork, and standing up for them when needed, but all my effort were fruitless (Cross, 2011). I even tried to converse with them serenely, in secret, concerning how their activities/behavior makes me suffer, but nothing changed. Office bullies is another setback that many other workers endure in there day after day activities. To me it brought about nervousness and tension, and most of my coworkers aimed at me because they saw me as a threat. I never allowed them to segregate me or make me feel awful concerning myself; instead I used to stand up for myself by refusing to go down to their level (Cross, 2011). In my former workplace there were grumblers and nit-pickers, they were always negative about everything. Such attitude debilitated my self-esteem, and always makes one feel uncompassionate. I observed that most workers complained in attempt to steer clear of disagreement, alleviate tension regarding things they believe it is beyond their control, or just to acquire some attention (Cross, 2011). Another setback that I experienced is poor workplace and business ethics, which made my job security unsafe. I tried to avoid coworkers who requested me to compromise my honesty. After reviewing my employer's business and workplace ethics, I realized they have a high chance of compromising my integrity (Lallukka et al., 2011, p.206). Solutions Setbacks are good: I have realized by now that setbacks are challenges, and challenges are good. Challenges assisted me to become skilled, wiser, and stronger. I further noted that when I am focused I gain clearness pertaining to where the setbacks stand. Furthermore, when I put effort pleasantly I realized setbacks helped me achieve my personal goals. Actually, it helped me discover my life’s purpose (Goen et al., 2002, p.661). This was achieved when I started seeing with my heart and not eyes. Moreover, it came to my knowledge that setbacks/problems are a practice sessions for what will surface afterwards. I am now prepared to face any kind of setbacks and to take liability for it, and this can be achieved by stopping to hold others responsible when am at fault (Goen et al., 2002, p.662). The problems made me to be ready to face the complexities and made me realize that dealing with workplace setbacks can only be achieved by placing the problems in the correct perspective. Feeding on hope is another potential solution to workplace-based problems, bearing in mind that hope has made people to continue existing, particularly in desolate islands and those erroneously incarcerated. I realized my life cannot certainly be more horrible as compared to such people; thus, hope keeps me living and keeps me going. While feeding on hope, it came to my attention that setting life Goals offered me optimism (Appelbaum et al., 2007, p.589). To overcome workplace problems, I observe that concentrating on my goals and comprehending how they work assists me to fulfill the set goals and as a result, offer me hope. So as to understand the significance of hope, I had to be grateful for the effects in life that I benefit from. Hope helped me to deal with workplace setbacks bearing in mind that it will ultimately fade away. Being Enthusiastic; for one to be enthusiastic, he has to act enthusiastically by being optimistic and avoiding pessimism that may have an effect on him/her. In my experience, I know unenthusiastic energy can leak through me and the workmates around me, but when I am enthusiastic I convey the affirmative energy to the coworkers around me. I further realized that enthusiasm destroys every unconstructive venomous that supply the negativism’s seed. According to Goen et al. (2002), that seed if not destroyed by enthusiastic power will grow and produce negativism fruits, which will be supplied to the workmates and most terribly, will go down to the floor and additionally exterminate the floor. Therefore, when I am enthusiastic I perform things efficiently and with effectiveness. 4.2 Verbal Communication Meetings: in meetings verbal communication takes place through sharing of ideas amongst the members. In my former workplace I used to be part of the effective meeting organizers where I participated in defining purpose, like if the meeting is for decision-making, approving a plan, brainstorm ideas, getting a status report, or communicating an amendment. When the meeting starts, as an organizer (Georgakopoulos & Guerrero, 2010, p.6) I use verbal communication to outline the meeting’s priorities, the needed results as well as the time permissible for each topic. Presentations and Lectures: Through verbal communication, as part of business experts I offered my lectures and presentations to express my skills on a certain subject. According to reference, whether a commercial expert offers instruction, communicates a strategy or vision, or illustrates an artifact for sale he/she must pass the message clearly by sufficiently preparing himself/herself (Georgakopoulos & Guerrero, 2010, p.9). Conversations: it usually entails two individuals talking about a subject. I was once told by m supervisor that successful verbal communication takes place during conversations, particularly when the orator recognizes the topic’s sensitivity, time restraints and sorts of queries the recipient might inquire (Trees, 2005, p.321). What’s more, when I converse face to face, I make use of listening skills that are active like saying again what the recipient has asked. Non-verbal Emblems: when in work I mostly make use of emblems, which serve the equivalent task as a word. For instance, I use emblems that signify 'come here!’ OK', or the movement of hand utilized when thumbing a lift. Still, I am mindful that even as a number of emblems are globally acknowledged, others have to be understood from a cultural perspective. Affect Displays: I use then as facial expressions to express the feelings I experience. Even though, most of the time is inadvertent, such looks offer well-built hints as to my exact emotional state (Daum et al., 2013, p.1899). 4.3 To effectively use my time, I always keep a to-do list, which is a prompt system that tell me of when i must do; thus, helping me to reduce the stress of memorizing everything in my head. I always walk with a paper and paper when I go to classes, meetings or seminars (Jones & Hood, 2010, p.387). My simplest reminder system is my diary, in which i record the important things i must do, such as deadlines and appointments. Another way of saving time is setting goals, given that when one set his/her goals clearly, and ensure that the goals are reasonable and attainable, they will be more productive (Sun & Yang, 2009, p.458). Before i set my goals, I first analyse my current state and weigh up which goals are essential to me as well as what action i must do to realize my target. In this regard, I have an emergency strategy or optional way to my set goal for fear that I may change plans. I also use prioritizing to effectively manage my time, bearing in mind that when I work harder and am well planned, but use most of my time on inconsequential work may make me resourceful, but not efficient (Kujala et al., 2006, p.517). Thus, to be efficient, i always make a decision on what tasks are imperative and vital and to concentrate on. The final method on how I effectively manage my time is through organizing my time, by recognising areas in my life where i waste too much time and try to condense them How to prioritize workload and monitor the deliveries One method that I use to prioritize workload and monitor the deliveries is by keeping a list of projects and deadlines. I realized that when one is concerned about deadlines, he/she will write in their diaries, where they can check often to know what is outstanding and at what time. In my case, I use an uncomplicated online list (Kujala et al., 2006, p.521). Another method that I use is to communicate a clear deadline to my workmates, and ensuring me and my workmates agree on a specific deadline. References Read More
