The paper 'The Process and Implications of Change in Organisations with a Particular Focus on British Airways' is a great example of a management dissertation. In the current competitive business environment, the capacity to initiate and manage change has become a crucial factor that promotes the survival of firms. Change is requisite when a firm’ s procedures and practices fail to produce the required results. Between 2008 and 2009, British Airways experienced hard times following the 2008 global economic crisis. During this period, the firm was operating on losses thereby compelling the management to implement cost-cutting measures.

The management led by the firm’ s CEO, Willie Walsh, settled on major changes that included freeze of a pay rise, reduction of cabin crew, and extension of working hours. Some employees resisted these changes leading to strikes and legal battles. This research project explores the process and implications of change in organizations with a particular focus on British Airways. The paper keenly assesses the role that British Airways senior managers played in the implementation of the proposed changes. The research paper employs a case study approach with inductive content analysis.

Data was collected from secondary sources. The findings indicate that leadership plays a crucial role in the management of organizational change. Change leaders have a decisive role in planning and communicating the change to other change stakeholders. Effective communication of change and involvement of employees in the change process facilitates the smooth implementation of change. The human dimension with regard to organizational change is critical. It is the attitude and reactions of people that prompt the failure or success of the change. In this regard, the management at BA should have employed a bottom-top approach to change management.

This approach promotes the active participation of both the change leaders and the influential change stakeholders. The ability of organizations to innovate and change is increasingly imperative in times of intense competition and economic downturn. Change is the only hope for the survival of organizations. According to Burke, what to change usually starts when leaders of an organization are confronted with some shift or event in the firm’ s external environment. Examples of drivers of change include economic recession, bursting of novel technology, mergers, and passage of new legislation to mention but a few.
