Training package Abstract This training package is about workplace health and safety for newly recruited employees. It provides a session plan for workplace hazards and key workplace safety procedures (Claitors, 2003). The session plan is expected to run for two hours and forty minutes. The session covers three topics: introduction to workplace health and safety, Hazards in the workplace and key workplace safety procedures (Lingard, 2002). It also has three activities in addition to introduction, assessment and conclusion (Eversole and Martin, 2005). The training session covers three objectives, supporting information about safety signs, Workstation audit checklist and other training equipments. It also covers what need to be done prior to commencing training, an introduction and conclusion. The training involves linking content to activities. The trainer will thus use questions and discussions most of the time to solicit trainee participation (Claitors, 2003). The session has been broken into three topics with a five minute break in between and each topic has been divided into smaller parts (Lingard, 2002). The learning process is designed to handle one-step at a time and trainees are given a chance to practice what the trainer demonstrates. The trainer uses questions to elicit discussions (Adamson, Cant and Hummell, 2001). Introduction This section of the training session is vital since it: Welcomes and helps in the orientation of learners Provides a sound identification and explanation of the session’s objectives Provides a preview of the session Explains to the trainees assessment requirements Creates a first impression of what the learners expect to gain from the session Assessment In line with the three objectives, trainees will be required to be able to be able to identify and explain the main health and safety responsibilities in the workplace and identify key OHS personnel (Claitors, 2003). The location of the first aid kit, and the location and meaning of different safety signs; to identify and address typical office hazards in accordance with workplace requirements; and to follow basic procedures for controlling typical office health and safety risks. To allow individual assessment of each trainee, adequate time need to be provided after the conclusion of the session to allow for assessment (Lingard, 2002). The result of the assessment of this skill is essential for the trainees to successful integration into the workforce and hence each trainee is expected to have outstanding results (Sinclair et al., 2003). Conclusion This session plan will ensure that the trainees are well prepared to work in office environment while ensuring that their health and safety is observed. The session plan will ensure that the trainer covers all the required content based on the objectives on schedule and in practical manner. Individualized assessment will ensure fairness and allow the assessor to determine whether the employee is well prepared to work in office environment while carrying out their tasks in a healthy and a safe manner.
