Leadership entails guiding and influencing efforts of a particular structure or an organization to attain its goals. Different researchers have different definitions of leadership (Paterson, 2013) for instance, Bernard defined leadership as the ability of a leader to influence his followers to attain a specific objective. The Bass model focuses on two leadership approaches, transformational and transactional leadership and this paper will concentrate on transactional leadership which was initially developed by Burn in 1978 (Odetunde, 2013).

Transactional leadership can also be referred to as managerial leadership. Transactional leadership puts focus on the task of supervision, organization as well as group performance. In transactional leadership, a leader encourages the compliance of his followers by both punishments and rewards. While transformational leadership strives to change how the future looks like, transactional leaders do not change how the future looks like since they maintain the status quo. Transactional leaders pay attention to the follower’s work so that they can get deviations and faults. Transactional leadership is the best during emergencies, crises, and projects that need to be conducted in a particular manner.

According to Pounder (2001), he states that there are three groups of transactional leadership and founded on four theories (Pearce, Sims Jr, Cox, Ball, Schnell, Smith and Trevino, 2002). The primary intent of this paper is to analyze Shell Oman marketing Company leadership practices and then discuss transactional leadership theory in detail. The paper will then benchmark transactional theory with Shell Oman’s leadership practices. Lastly, the paper gives recommendations to develop Shell Oman leadership and assess its ability to enforce the recommendations.
