Companies have become international thus enabling workers to work anywhere in the world. This means that people no longer have to be confined to the geography where they are. Someone can work anywhere and still work for a company located hundreds of miles away. This is because there are high interconnections of computer networks, which has necessitated this (Solomon, & Schrum, 2007). This phenomenon has been created by technology. Companies to compete globally have used technology and these companies are becoming leaner and efficient in their operations.
It is now possible for companies to track goods as they are transported from their original places to where they are going. This is made possible with the use of technology. This has enabled organizations and people alike to cut down their expenses. The web has changed also so that today, there are no static websites that used to be seen in the past. Today’s websites have been transformed into ones where the users can interact with the website and create information and post instantly.
It is clear that we are able to work in a different ways with the use of online tools from the desktop-based tools that we were used to. We are no longer confined to looking for information but we are able to create and post information at the same time. The web has become a two-way traffic where people also have a say in the content that is being posted and read on it. This is popularly known as Web 2.0.
The new paradigm shift in teaching and learning has enabled people to interact with the Internet like never before. There are many implications that are found here. This paper will look at the effects and the implications that the new technology has in the education sector. Emphasis will be laid on the effects that are seen in the multimedia industry. Web 2.0 and learningEducation leaders and implementers should be able to understand what the Web mean for the learners and the tutors. Students will have to be prepared so that they face the new challenges that come with Web 2.0 and its associated tools.
The beauty of this is the fact that many young people in many countries with developed systems are aware of these new tools. Given the fact that the new tools that have been brought about by the Web 2.0 technologies motivate students, they can be used to effect education too. They are found to spend long hours using the new tools on the Internet. This means that they can be made to learn using these tools too. Although there is need to have a well-rounded education, there is a much stronger need to have students learn the skills that will enable them to be as competitive as possible in the next generation. According to Thomas Friedman, the world is regarded as flat; he argues that the advantages that were seen in the West some years ago have disappeared. The East is gaining ground making this a great time where the many factors are converging to make this a better world (Shuen, 2008).
