The paper "Installing a New Operating System" is a worthy example of a case study on information technology. The technological outlook of the society is changing rapidly and therefore, the organizations are supposed to keep up with the change or die out due to extinction (Mohr, 1971). The idea of investing in new computer hardware leads to acquiring new software and operating system (Ettlie, 1982). But, nowadays the organizational focus is on buying out new operating systems in order to use the current hardware of the company more effectively and efficiently (Hulin & Roznowski, 1985). The re-installment procedure is believed to be painstakingly difficult (Brynjolfsson & Hitt, 2000) as it involves the removal of previously used OS from all workstations and the installation of a new one as soon as possible.

The proposed plan should be executed on a long weekend so that the general practices of the organization should not be disrupted. Firstly, the staff should be guided to save their essential data and then, the technical personnel should store these data in a central server so that all of the individual workstations can be emptied when installing a new system. Secondly, all of the data stored in the central server should be debugged via a virus scanning and elimination program. Finally, after conducting the individual virus scans on the workstations all of them should be reprogrammed in order to use the new operating system. The work-order diagram is as follows: -

The older version of Windows 2007 was used across the organization. But, the management found out Windows 7 is more efficient and resilient to virus attacks and therefore, they made a decision to make a switch. Furthermore, the plan will work because it will not disturb the routine of the company and then, all of the data will be debugged and ultimately technical staff will have the opportunity to train other departments’ staff in using the new OS along the way.
