Whereas individual-level concerns and values have been addressed as part of Human Resource Development, the concept of humans as resources has been a dominant theme in organizational analysis. However, organizations have embraced strategies such as team working, employability, and entrepreneurial behaviors which contest the idea of humans as resources.

Several methods and techniques have been proposed and implemented for organizational development. Organizational development which is defined as the strategic organization-wide endeavor to enhance organizational performance is a response to transformations in the organization's environment. Several principles are appreciated which include the concept of teams, confidence, competition, communication, strategic planning, action research, organizational-wide, organizational-wide, planned change, and remedy. Team development has gained acceptance as an imperative organizational development strategy. A team is defined as a group of persons working towards achieving a common goal. There are different types of teams, however regardless of the team type; team development is intended to enhance the effectiveness of persons whose jobs require that they work together. Different kinds of literature offer diverse views, understandings, and conclusions on the common types of teams, however, most of the studies are in agreement that the common types of teams in the workplace are cross-fictional teams, problem-solving teams, virtual teams, and self-managed work teams. Other studies suggest that several kinds of groups can evolve into teams; these groups include project groups, committees, quality circles, and task forces.

Teams are established to achieve success. The success of the team essentially defendant on its effectiveness of the team. There are some primary requirements for the team to be effective; these include free information flow, and supportive, collaborative, trustful, and respectful people relationships. Issue-based and amicable conflict resolution, open and participative atmosphere, consensus decision-making, creativity and innovativeness, higher motivation, and fare allocation of rewards. 

The actual impact of team development on organizational performance has been a controversial topic with several authors and researchers forwarding contradictory views, opinions, and conclusions concerning team development. Whereas several proponents of team development have argued that team building especially team building is of paramount importance in enhancing organizational performance, others of contrary opinion have argued that team building is a fad and a mirage with hyped hypothetical benefits, without accompanying concrete evidence to support the claims. These contradictory arguments have raised an important question, does team building have any benefits in enhancing organizational performance?
