It is a limitation of his time that he could not see the fracturing of the individual among the different social roles they are expected to play within a given 24 hour period.  While I believe Durkheim contributed greatly to the field of sociology, especially in bringing in the academic recognition it needed, I believe his greatest contribution was in presenting future scientists with a wide range of questions regarding the dynamics of societies.

It used to be that children could only read books or play outside with other children. It was a simpler world and there was less reason to worry. In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, the author focuses more closely on the difficulties that are faced by women in slavery. For one, female slaves were the victims of rape, which Jacobs discusses her own experience with this. Female slaves often became pregnant as a result of being raped.

The position of structural functionalism on the death penalty can, therefore, be interpreted in opposing directions. On one hand, the death penalty is viewed as an instrument for promoting social cohesion, while on the other, it is said to reflect the inherent institutionalized violence in the society in which it is given sanction or practised.
