Bad effects of technology on children’s health and intelligence Outline 1. Introduction 2. Negative effects of technology a) Health b) Intelligence 3. Conclusion Introduction With the development of technologies many positive changes are happening in the modern world. Production processes are fastened, processing data using modern computers takes just some seconds. It is no need to spend much paper for conducting business as it is possible to store everything in computer or on the server. At the same time the technologies lead to degradation of population, especially of new generations. People’s health is also greatly damaged. The given paper will prove that the effects of technology can be easily supervised by people. Negative effects of technology: a) Health Health is the first that suffers from technology. Talking about health it is essential to mention that nowadays children spend much less time playing active games in the street, they prefer to play computer games or watch TV instead. The same can be said about adults. Sitting near the computer during 8-10 hours a day influences people’s health negatively. And if to take into account the fact that almost every person has a car today, it becomes clear that sedentary way of life is considered to be a norm. First and the most important factor is load on vision. This is the reason why a child may feel headache and vertigo. If to work with computer for a long period of time, visual overstrain can lead to sight injure. However, it is essential to mention that the computer is not the main reason of sight failure. Heredity, television and reading in the dark are the main factors. If the work with computer is carefully coordinated, sight will not suffer. The next problem is constrained pose. Sitting near the computer, a child should look at the screen from the certain distance and keep its hands on the keyboard. This makes him take one position and do not change it for a long time. In terms of pose, computer is much more dangerous than TV, which allows to move with ease. Constrained pose causes many problems such as arthropathy, choker, osteochondrosis (Tucker, 2009). Mental load is also essential to consider. Computer demands as much concentration as driving. Interesting games demand much attention, which is not typical for usual conditions. This area has not been studied carefully yet, but the mental load certainly can be reduced. First, it is essential to make breaks, secondly, games’ content should be supervised. Not only computers, but also mobile phones can spoil people’s health. It is proved that human health can suffer, because of so-called thermal effect. Moreover, when we look at the telephone’s screen very often, and we do that really often, our sight can be spoiled. Mobile phones also contribute to sedentary way of life as it is no need to go and look for somebody or to meet somebody to talk to. It is enough to call his/her mobile (Cotton, 2008). b) Education and social life Researchers prove that every year the level of intelligence and erudition of our children is decreasing. If 2-3 mistakes in the essay were considered a problem in our past, now pupils usually make not less than 10-20 mistakes in every work. This is proved both by teachers and parents. The basic level of knowledge received in school has also significantly decreased. And the both problems are first of all connected with the fact that modern children do not read much. Computers, smartphones and other technical devices are gradually replacing books. Technologies are widely used in class that facilitates teaching process, however when a computer is going the job instead of a teacher or a pupil, the results are disappointing. Children make many mistakes, because computer makes corrections instead of them. They are typing instead of writing (Wiseman, 2013).. Moreover, modern children may lack the skills of life communication because they prefer to communicate through internet or by sms. This leads to asocial life of many of them. “The results of the empirical study and prior literature detailed in this chapter may provide helpful information to college administrators. Administrators may want to develop campaigns that inform parents of the benefits of using specific applications of the Internet and mobile phones to stay in touch with students and the benefits using this technology will have in their transition to college and well-being outcomes, such as decreasing uncertainty, improving communication, and fostering social interaction” (Cotten, 2008, p.67 ). Conclusion The conclusion can be made that parents, if they are interested in the child’s education and worry about its health, should pay attention to this problem and do their best to make a child interested in reading. Actually, technologies also can help here. If your child does not want to take the book, you can try to make him interested in internet libraries. This will make the time spent near the computer more beneficial. The main thing is to find the right approach to make a child like reading. The harmful effect on health can also be reduced if we use devices not all the time, but only if it is really necessary. It is not necessary to drive a car to the closest shop, make a call to a person if he/she is sitting in another room, play chess with computer instead of playing it with a friend who is sitting near. It is parents who should understand this first and try to make children also realize this. If we do not realize this on time, our world will turn into something technical and we will forget about human relations. Technology should help, but it should not cause harm and it is humans who can and should coordinate this process. References Cotten, S R. (2008).
