Green Assignment As the operations manager of Xavier Company, I would major largely on reduction of water usage and increased electricity efficiency usage. The rate of gallons used by each person per day must also be reduced to meet the eco-compliant environment as directed by the GM. The gallons should be halved on individual basis and this will enable the hotel to achieve good yearly gallon savings (Trompf, 301). According to the eco-regulatory entities, reduced water usage positively impacts the consumers and the hotel surrounding. Water used is reduced through reduction in the daily used gallons. Xavier is 375-roomed hotel and this makes it difficult to control water usage. The cost of each gallon of water tends to be $5.72per 1000 and this has to be multiplied by 375 rooms to know the total usage of gallons used by the hotel lodgings. Being that $5.72 = 1000 Entire hotel usage = 1000*375 = 375000 gallons The total cost of gallons per room is therefore $5.72 Reduction = 375000/2 = 187500 gallons Yearly savings = 37500-187500 =187500 gallons 1) Water Reducing water usage depends on the customer water usage per day. To achieve an eco-compliant environment, the customer water usage must be reduced and allocation of gallons per room changed. Excess usage of water is regarded as water of resources both to the hotel management and its surrounding. Rules regarding water usage must also be implemented to help the customers understand the consequences of water wastage. After gallon allocation, a customer should not be allowed to request for an extra gallons to meet daily gallon allocation per room. Customers must always be made aware of the changes made in the hotel management system to enhance good customer-hotel cooperation. Apart from the water usage by customers, other hotel activities that require excess use of water must also be reduced to help meet the eco-compliant environment. 2) Electric & HVAC Electricity usage in the hotel is another factor that has great impact on environmental conservation. According to eco-friendly guidelines, excess usage of electricity is a big waste to both the company and entire surrounding. A customer should use the electricity in necessary situations that does not allow emission of too much heat. As an operations manager, I would propose to the GM the need for change in light bulbs and obsolete electrical equipment. Some bulbs consume a lot of electrical power due to the huge amount of heat needed to power them up. This is considered a waste of electrical energy hence calling for quick replacement with energy saving light bulbs. Apart from consumer energy usage limit, the hotel operation energy must also be limited to meet efficiency in electrical power usage. This can be done through avoiding unnecessary hotel energy usage activities that have alternatives (Helliwell, 116). Pumping, cooling, heating, and other necessary hotel activities must also be done within a set time-frame to enhance good records of power energy. Updating of equipment is vital step that has to be put into consideration before reaching any other electricity efficiency decision. Outdated electrical equipment tends to consume a lot of energy hence making it difficult to control power usage. After the installation of efficient electrical equipment, the hotel will realize good electrical energy consumption as compare to the previous use of outdated equipment. The consumers will also be happy as the level of heat in the rooms will be moderated. There are a lot of indirect negative impacts on the environment with excess use of electrical power. Transmission of excess heat, tend to make consumers uncomfortable hence lowering customer satisfaction rate. Actually, a hotel should be an eco-friendly zone to attract more customers or consumers. The gains of electrical on maximization of electrical efficiency seem to be great as compared to the initial use of electrical energy. Energy efficient bulbs consumes little amount of energy and this makes it good for customer usage. A Customer in a room, use the energy saving bulbs for long hours without any effect of heat and with little power usage. HVAC are among some the services enjoyed by the customer. HVAC is one of the hotel operational activities that ensure constant heat control in customer or consumer rooms. At times these services seem to consume a lot of electric energy when unnecessarily used by a customer. The room temperature determines the use of HVAC hence calling for efficient and energy saving HVAC equipment. The HVAC operation system is not a mandatory service hence it can be listed as last priority in ensuring proper power consumption. The ventilation does not require power energy hence machining it a necessary and cheap service (Batisse, 76). Heat and Air conditioning tend to consume a lot of power though not a necessity in the hotel management. Actually, HVAC is an operational service meant to provide comfort to the customer. Though HVAC is not a necessity, customer comfort must also be considered in the hotel or lodging management. The Heating and cooling system tend to consume a lot of energy as compared to any other hotel operational services. The generation and distribution of electrical energy require the use of energy saving machines with few and light mechanical components. Heavy mechanical components tend to consume a lot of electrical energy hence need more power to heat (Yamamoto, 462). The distribution of power though the Heating equipment takes a lot of time due to slow energy distribution into the machine components. The only possible way of reducing unwanted heat transfer is though the purchase of modern energy conserving machines. Emission of too much heat both to the hotel rooms and its surrounding largely affect the ecosystem hence making the peoples’ lives difficult due to impurities both to the water and air. Excessive heat transfer also leads to release of too much smoke or radiation emission that also affects people’s ‘health. Generally, the hotel or lodging industry tends to experience a lot of difficulties in dealing with their environmental foot prints. Every hotel works hard to outsmart their competitors by ensuring good services to their clients. Today the kind of services or merits of gaining consumer attraction is through elimination of environmental foot prints. Work Cited Batisse, Michel.
