Thesis: Athletes exercising endurance sports can maintain or even enhance their performance by choosing a vegetarian diet I. INTRODUCTION Proper diet is an important part for ensuring the health and well being of individuals on a day-to-day basis. Increasingly people are leading a busy day to day lives sticking to strict routines and finding little time for any physical exercise. Contextually, the role of proper nutritional diet becomes vital. The importance of good dietary habits is quite prominent in the lives of athletes or individuals directly related to sports. Athletes require utmost amount of energy and stamina during both competition and training sessions. They must maintain their fitness on a regular basis so that they can give their 100% effort during matches and sport events (Brazier 1-13). The importance of diets for sport persons and athletes can be understood by the fact that it is directly associated with performance of athletes. It is believed that the proper nutrient in the diets of athletes further enhances the level of effectiveness of their performance, which certainly augments the overall outcome in terms of quality (Fuhrman 1-22). It is evident that athletes who maintain a healthy lifestyle for them along with proper and timely physical exercise will be able to ensure a healthy and fit body in the long run and perform better. There are certainly specific elements that make a particular diet healthy or appropriate comprising calories, carbohydrates and fluids along with nutrients such as vitamins, proteins and minerals among others (Matt and Matthew 20-36). It is clear that the energy and performance levels of athletes are directly relevant to the composition of the diet that athletes intake on regular basis. This particular research “i.e. to examine whether athletes exercising endurance sports can maintain or even enhance their performance by choosing a vegetarian diet”, aims at providing an elaborative comprehension about the food and nutrition with specific consideration of the impact and importance of food and nutrition for athletes. Contextually, it must be mentioned that vegetarian and vegan diets have become increasingly popular. These dietary options are seen as a supplement to non-vegetarian diets such as meat and other animal foods. Vegan foods are typically plant based, while vegetarian foods include a combination of plants based food items with dairy products. Vegan and vegetarian foods ensure a balanced and varied diet, which includes all the essential nutrients an individual needs. These diets are preferred by modern athletes so that they can perform better. THESIS STATEMENT This paper presents an elaborate understanding of the philosophy of food and nutrition for athletes with special consideration to vegan and vegetarian diet as a substitution for meat and other animal based food groups. II. FOOD & NUTRITION PHILOSOPHY A. Food and Nutrition. 1. Healthy Balanced Nutrition A healthy balanced diet include dietary supplements that keeps a human body healthy and assures that he/she can lead a proper day to day lifestyle. A balanced diet is one which includes the right type and amount of food that one must intake to get the desired energy and stamina level needed by a human body for proper functioning of the body parts such as tissues, organs and cells (New York Times, “Balanced Diet”). Correspondingly, a healthy balanced diet for athletes is one that includes dietary supplements in the right amount in alignment to the nutritional needs of the athlete with regard to the sports they are associated with. In general, both male and female athletes need to intake high level of calories in order to ensure the right balance of nutrient to meet the energy level required in their professional domain. In this regard, carbohydrates and protein are among the most essential of these nutrients (McCarty, “Balanced Diet for an Athlete”). 2. Eight Principles of Food and Health by T. Colin Campbell There are certain specific principles of food and health that were formulated by T. Colin Campbell during the course of his research and studies conducted on this particular subject matter. The principles are directly or indirectly applicable with the day to day functioning of the athletes in the sporting domain. The study also argued plant based nutrition can be regarded as highly beneficial as compared to that of animal based products such as egg and meat. However, he revealed through the study that the effect of plant based products and animal based products might differ considerably. B. Veganism & Vegetarianism. 1. Health Benefits & Arguments/Criticism There are certain health benefits for individuals and athletes who are among the close followers of Veganism and Vegetarianism. Individual and athletes who are considered to be vegans will be able to receive health benefits such as reduced level of cholesterol owing to less intake of saturated fats. The level of carbohydrates is deemed to be much higher as compared to other dietary forms. Additionally, nutritional elements such as fiber, magnesium and potassium, which are important for a healthy living, are also deemed to be present in abundance in vegan diets (The Vegan Society,” For the animals”). On the other hand, the concept of vegetarianism also has its own advantages for the health of individuals and athletes. In order to provide a better comprehension about the effectiveness and implication of vegan and vegetarian diets, examples of notable vegan or vegetarian athletes would be vital to consider (Carmichael, Rutberg, and Zawadzki 1-15). Contextually, this particular research provides examples of Mac Danzig, Andy Lally and Mike Tyson as the vegan athletes who have been successful in their profession by following a plant based diets. A. Mac Danzig. Mac Danzig was a one of the notable mixed martial artist of the American region. Prior to his retirement, the athlete was well known for his presence in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As a UFC fighter he was quite successful and was adored by his fans all over the world. He is an American boxer who has retired from the game owing to his increasing age. He is well known for his record of being the youngest boxer in the history of the game and to have become the undisputed champion of the world. He is a follower of vegan or plant based diets. The game i.e. boxing demands high level of stamina and power from the end of the performers and consequently players will need to adhere to the right or balanced diet in order to get the required nutrition. In this context, the role of eating habits of people in assuring a proper healthy lifestyle for themselves is deemed to quite significant to say the least. It is believed that in order to get the right amount of nutrition one needs to take products of high vitamins and protein, which primarily resembles with animal based food items such as milk, meat, fish and others. This particular form of beliefs was mainly seen among the traditional athletes who hold the perception that animal based diets act as the right supplement for them to get the desired level of stamina and power that can ensure them to get better results in their professional domain. However, this particular perception has often been argued by nutritional experts through depicting that plants based products also holds similar nutritional values as compared to any animal based diets. Notably, it has also been comprehended from the research that plant based products not only have high level of nutritional values for an individual but it also help them to keep their ethical principles intact with regard to respecting the lives of living beings.
