A Window between the World Organizations A Window between the World Organizations (AWBW) is non-profit organization that focuses on the needs of the society by rehabilitating the suffering and traumatized in society. The organization uses the work of art a healing tool to empower and transform communities and persons who have experienced traumatizing experiences in the society. Presently, the organization serves a population of 1900 persons each year, comprising of men, children and women. The organization uses a door-to-door campaign to reach its clients, asking any works of art or even magazines. The organization has helped to provide healing and hope for the society at a time when more people in the society are experiencing stress and traumatizing experiences. The works of art is an imagery of the ability of the people to create change and to transform, not only their lives but also the lives of the suffering in the society. In the contemporary times, management has become an important aspect of any organization that intends to achieve it short-term as well as long-term objectives. The changes in the work environment and public expectation have posed challenges to organizations, which makes the work of management more complex. The management is involved in the work of coordinating all the finances, employees and activities of the organization in such a way that the objectives of their organizations are accomplished. In AWBW, the concepts of management are crucial to ensure that the organization attains its goals of becoming a global organization that provides hope and healing to the suffering in the society (Abraham 11). The human resource management of the organization requires motivating the employees, providing expansion incentives and to inspire the right organizational behaviors within the organization. One important aspects of any organization is the employee appraisal within an organization. The welfare of the employees falls directly below the job description of the human resource managers. The human resource managers are concerned with the plight of workers right from the moment of recruitment and selection, worker integration and employee development. The human resource managers design the strategies which should be used to manage the employees and are responsible of their welfare throughout their period of work. In the contemporary work environment, the human resource managers are experiencing a hard task in managing the employees from designing the way they should be handled, paid and even enticed (Woodrow and Guest 13-23). In AWBW, the human resource managers have paid critical attention to the role of employee motivation to drive the goals of the organization. Since the organization is dependent on donations, the organizations compensation system faces financial challenges. To manage low paid employees within the organization, AWBW management has paid critical attention in selecting individuals who understand the role of the organization to act on the basis of charity, rather than the financial benefit. The human resource uses its recruiting process to communicate the objectives of the organization to ensure that all employees are aligned to the organizational strategies. From a close observation, AWBW employees work selfless to contribute to the organization success. Therefore, the employees of the company look beyond the financial benefit, and work along with the management to drive the organization to success (Abraham 18). The current success of the organization emanates from the employee commitment and alignment the both short-term and long-term goals of the organization. However, the management pays special attention to the employee motivation. In behavioral theories of management, employee motivation is one of key strategies of ensuring that employees remain loyal to organizations. Motivated employees provide higher work output hence contributing to higher organizational performance. The role of the management is to ensure that employees remain motivated with their attention directed to the success of the organization. In AWBW, the organizational leaders have paid particular attention to motivating the employees to win their loyalty and keep them objective oriented. One way that the organization has kept the employees vibrant is by contributing to their personal welfare. AWBW pays keen attention to the problems of the employees by supporting them in times of their difficulties to ensure that the recover from such difficulties. For instance, when an employee loses their parents, the organization donates to the family and participates actively to all the affairs of the family. Support to the families of the employees helps them recover quickly and motivates the specific employees to remain close to the organization. In brief, the organization works as a family to ensure that all employees have a sense of belonging in the united community. The organization has faced a big challenge in its globalisation strategy. When an organization rolls its services internationally, it is bound to experience the forces of diversity that often affect the process of service delivery within an organization. Cultural diversity is one of the challenges that have faced the organization over the past years. In the 21st century, cultural integration has become an inevitable phenomenon that emanated from globalisation (Abraham 11). As the world becomes a small village, people from different communities are bound to live within the same nation. The variation of the attitudes and behavior of a multicultural environment affects the approach used to provide services. Since AWBW is directly involved with community issues, it is bound to face the challenges of handling people with different cultures and backgrounds. The organization uses diversity management strategies to ensure that they understand the different needs of people from different communities. To handle the challenges of cultural variance, the organization integrates a multicultural task force within its work environment. This cultural diversity within the work force allows the organization to understand different cultural attitudes that may affect the organizational performance. Misunderstanding of cultural attitudes limits the ability of the organization to handle problems of different communities. For instance, while the natives are more likely to open up and share their challenges with the organizations, the foreigners within the nation may hesitate to provide critical information essential for supporting them. Therefore, as the organization conducts a door-to-door campaign, the employees take keen consideration of the cultural perspective of the particular family to identify the appropriate approach to use in handling their issue. The ability of the organization to appeal to cultural diversity management strategies has helped the organization to handle the diverse needs of the population. This has been a big milestone attributed to the organization success. The role of leadership within an organization is of paramount importance to the development of the organization. The concept of organizational leadership has become an issue of discussion as many scholars investigate the most efficient form of leadership for the modern business environment (Abraham 14). There arises a question of whether there is a difference between leadership and management within an organization. From a close observation, there is a great difference between a manager and a leader especially in the roles that they play. In role playing, a manager has the mandate to control the people under him while the leader plays the role of inspiring those under him. In terms of power, the manager holds positional power by the virtue of the position he or she holds within the organizational hierarchy while the leader has personal power that emanates from his experience. In terms of role implementation, the manager relies of set guidelines and sticks to the plan laid down. However, the leader has the freedom to remain innovative by combining skills of creativity and logical decision making to arrive at the best solutions to organizational problems. This shows clearly that there is a great difference between a manager and a leader (39-40). However, there is an overlap between the roles of a leader and a manager. Often leaders are involved in the roles of planning, organizing, staffing and controlling, the same as those that a manager plays. On the other hand, there are times when the managers are involved in influencing or inspiring a group of people to meet their goals, which is a critical role of leadership (46-47). For a non-profit non-government organization, the aspect of leadership is crucial to inspire performance within an organization. In profit generating organizations, it is more popular for the management to utilize power to guide those under their authority. However, for AWBW, the concept of leadership is important to guide the people and ensure that they remain as a community directed towards similar goals. Although the company has a hierarchical setting, leadership approaches are important for the accomplishment of various tasks (Abraham 39-45). To achieve this effect in the organization, the top level managers guide the employees as members of the same community rather employees. The employees and the leaders have a one-on-one exchange to create friendship and work as members of the same family. This has contributed immensely to the formation of a community with a common goal. From the experience of AWBW, the greatest challenge has been in the financial aspect of the organization. As the program rolls out to cover more victims of trauma, a challenge arises in raising the necessary finances to fund all the activities of the project. The organization requires the finances to coordinate all the activities, enable the employees to travel to target destinations or even to pay their salaries. Particularly, AWBW has faced the challenge of maintaining sizeable personnel to achieve the various objectives of the organization. As the company develops a strategy to broaden a wider scope and to acquire to provide service to more people in the society, it requires enough work force to facilitate these activities. The company has devised ways to build their workforce to achieve its long term objectives. For instance, the company has provided a portal for volunteers to contribute to service. The creation of a web platform has attracted a higher flow of people within the organization. Through the website, the organization has received volunteers who have joined the door-to-door campaign and contributed to the success of the program. The ability of the management to seek solutions for problems arising in the organization is an expression of the management’s ability to design strategic change and innovative approaches that are crucial for any organization. The role of the management is to seek lasting solutions that can propel an organization through its hardships. AWBW management strategies have helped the organization to overcome the financial hardships that would have limited the organizational strategic goals. National Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster (National VOAD) is another not-for-profit organization that helps and supports the victims of disaster. Since its launch in 1970, the organization has developed community developed programs to reach out for victims of disaster and to help them in reconstructing their lives. Just like, AWBW, National VOAD has undergone a wide range of challenges in its discovering its path in supporting the community. The organization faced financial challenges, hence limiting its ability to reach out and help the affected communities to recover quickly. The organization depends on donors, well-wishers and volunteers to support the organization financial as well as to contribute to service of the community. The company has particularly used internet networks to sensitize the public, attract donors and seek more volunteers. Consequently, the organization has grown to become a fully pledged community that can support the programs activities internationally. The idea of National VOAD to push its activities to the international market is a strong strategic decision that has seen the organization expands its global coverage. Charity organizations are designed to focus on the challenges not only of the local communities but also the international communities. The main objective is to improve the quality of life for all humanity in the world by supporting the weak in its society. As business organizations launch plans to focus on international markets, not-for –profit organizations seek to expand the scope of their service delivery to ensure that they transform the world into a better place. However, from the experience of National VOAD manager, the international market poses new challenges for organizations, prompting them to rethink their management strategies. Cultural attitudes become more serious and it becomes a complex issue for the organization to understand their population. For instance, some cultures may be hostile to foreigners, making it hard to offer them assistance. Therefore, the managers have to find new approaches to deliver services and support unique needs of the society. From this point of view, it is an opportunity for AWBW to consider rolling out their services to the international community. From a close analysis, many countries in third world countries have little access to supportive groups while the victims of trauma are many. Therefore, the services of AWBW are in demand in the international market. To launch an international plan, the organizational management needs to learn from other organizations before rolling out services. A number of strategic changes may be essential to reach out the international market. For instance, the organization can collaborate with other international companies as an international market entry strategy. This is much similar to the strategies that many organizations have used to internationalise their business. It is recommendable for AWBW to consider new mechanisms of gathering finances to assist it in broadening its service and geographic scope. To attract more donors, the organization needs to take advantage of the modern systems of constructing networks that contribute to the success of the organization. In the era of information technology, it is possible to reach out donors from across the world. Unlike in the past years when the organization has sought support from the local community, it is crucial for the organization to focus on the international scope to achieve its financial goals. On this note, the organization needs to establish as strong online presence to market its name. This can be achieved by using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter that are efficient in bringing people together (Woodrow and Guest 35). Shifting the focus to the international community will provide the organization with the opportunity crucial participants that will help them in widening their coverage. In conclusion, organizational management skills are important in directing and coordinating services of an organization, whether a business or non-profit generating organization. A Window between Worlds is an example of organizations that has survived organizational challenges through effective leadership. As learnt in the management theories, employee motivation, development of strategic plans and organizational behavior are pre-requisite for organizational success. From a personal experience in AWBW, effective leadership has helped the organization to roll out its services smoothly, harmonise its employees and win the public support. In addition, the organization has managed to overcome financial challenges in many charity organizations. For an organization to remain viable, there is a need for the management to learn new approaches from the experiences of other organizations such as National VOAD, which have succeeded in their international plans. As the organization plans to broaden the scope of services, it would be important to consider the international needs of the community. The organizational leaders need to think of new approaches to attract donors and volunteers to help AWBW to enter the international market and transform the world to a better place for humanity.
