Installation of wireless solution The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is a non -profitable association representing all 141 accredited U.S and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools. It also represents nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems. The AAMC mission is to serve and lead the academic medicine community to improve the health of all. With the services provided by the AAMC, it will be such a big step to have a wireless solution in the campus. Wi-Fi is a local area wireless computer networking technology that allows electronic devices to network. Information can be obtained from the internet through this wireless service. With this service, AAMC will be in a position to inform a very big percentage of students about their medical services. To begin with, there should be a computer laboratory in the campus. If not, the AAMC should organize to put up one and provide enough computers. Then Wi-Fi should be installed in the computer lab first. After this, the AAMC should ensure that this Wi-Fi service is available in the whole of the campus compound (Kurose, 2013). This includes within the classrooms, the hostels, and the administration block and within the school compound. The service should be free of charge to both the student and any other person using this service. With enough, funds, the AAMC can organize with the administration to provide the students with i-pads and cell phones either for free or at a cheaper price. This is to ensure that all the students are able to make use of the availability of the wireless internet service. With every student having their own gadget; it will be easier for each to get the information easily. By installing this wireless service, it will be convenient to the students; they will be able to access network resources from nearly all any convenient location within the campus. With this convenience, the students will be in a position to access all the information provided by the AAMC in the internet. The mobility of Wi-Fi makes it possible for the students to access the internet even outside their classrooms. They will access the service even at playgrounds and hostels. Having Wi-Fi service within the campus can be very productive putting in mind that the students will be able to maintain nearly a constant affiliation to the internet as they move from place to place. This will be important considering that any business a student was doing in the internet can be accomplished from any convenient place (Kurose, 2013). The expandability of Wi-Fi is also astonishing. It can serve many students and still the service will be the same even with an increase in the number of the students. AAMC will benefit a lot by investing in installation of Wi-Fi to the campus. AAMC will not spend a lot on the installation of the Wi-Fi. The installation of this service is cost effective and affordable. Depending on the number of the students connected to the internet, Wi-Fi is a fast service. It is faster when users are few but in either way, it is a very reliable service. With Wi-Fi there is also ease of communication (Mann, 2000). It is not only convenient but it also allows the users to stay connected to the network throughout. This benefit of having Wi-Fi will allow the AAMC to have consistence in the communication with the students. Having indoor Wi-Fi is whereby Wi-Fi is installed inside a building. This can be either in the classrooms, the administration block, the hostels and even the coffee cafes. Outdoor Wi-Fi is where the installation is done outside a building. The device is placed strategically such that the service can be received at any point outside the building. With AAMC installing the Wi-Fiboth indoor and outdoor, the students will be in a position to get the internet connection either indoor or outdoor. This way, the students will be able to get information provided by the AAMC online. The bandwidth of the Wi-Fi depends on the router. There are routers with 100mbs and others with 300mbs. Since the bandwidth of the Wi-Fi is shared equally among the users, the AAMC should consider installing Wi-Fi whose high internet service provider offers a high bandwidth. This is to ensure that the speed of the service to every student’s gadget is realistic. However, when the internet is meant to share files rapidly among computers, the speed won’t play a huge role in bandwidth. Transferring files across a local network when every computer has a certain adapter, and the network uses the same router, it means that the computers are not having the speed divided among them but they are using the full number of megabytes (Kurose, 2013). This will allow for streaming media from a central server or for moving large files, like videos, back and forth without hindrance. When it comes to roaming, Wi-Fi allows the users to use different networks to get access to the internet. Roaming is a technology which enables a station to its access point internationally while remaining connected to the network. This aspect also enables outsiders to also get access to the network while within the Wi-Fi coverage area. The installation of Wi-Fi in the campus will be affordable to the AAMC. This is because as discussed earlier, Wi-Fi is cost effective and affordable. It will only require purchasing of routers and the adapters enough to cover the campus premises and the area within the campus. Other expenses incurred may include the persons installing these gadgets. Training will also be required for the students about how to get connected to the internet. Considering that the students have already had their experience with how to operate their own cell phones, training them how to get connected will be an easy job. With the assistance from the student’s teachers, it will be even easier to get them to understand how to get connected to the Wi-Fi. Once the students have learned how to get connected, then they will be in a position to get access to the internet and obtain all the useful information to them. Mostly, the students will be able to have online studies about medical courses and discover more ways of cure. AAMC should also consider putting up a wireless security. Wireless security is the prevention of unauthorized access or damage to devices using wireless networks. Some laptops have wireless cards pre-installed; this does not mean that this certain laptop is not prone to security issues (Mann, 2000). Hackers find wireless networks relatively easy to break and sometimes they can use they can use wireless technology to into wired networks. For this reason, it will be very important for AAMC to define effective wireless security policies. With the increased risks to users of Wi-Fi, hackers have found their ways to get into a computer and tamper with the information. The availability of windows or Linux in the web at no charge has highly increased the chances of the hackers to interfere with information through the Wi-Fi (Miller, 2010). With the many security threats associated with wireless networks, AAMC should put strong measures to ensure no risks are encountered. For instance, use of encryption. Encryption scrambles message send over a wireless network so that they cannot easily be read. If the Wi-Fiinstalled is not encrypted, encryption can be enabled on the wireless security settings page of the wireless router. Wi-Fi protected access 2 is known to be stronger than the other encryptions. Choosing a stronger password can be another way of providing security to the Wi-Fi network. If the encryption option is not used, AAMC should change the Wi-Fi password from default supplied with the router and use a password that will be easy for the students to remember and difficult for a stranger to guess. Most preferred password should consist both letters and words. Also, hiding the id of the Wi-Fi. The router broadcasts its ID to anyone withinthe range. The router settings can be altered so that it cannot broadcast the SSID. This will avoid alerting the hackers of the existence of the Wi-Fi (Mann, 2000). It is also important to check out if that the students’ devices do not auto connect toWi-Fisignals. If the students’ devices auto connects with any Wi-Fi signal, then they will run the risk by automatically connecting to unknown and potentially dangerous networks. The students should be educated on the importance of switching off their devices auto-connect option. After the installation of the Wi-Fi in the campus, the students will benefit a lot academically. For instance, it will enable new practices to merge because access to the internet will become ubiquitous. The access to unlimited resources will become available anytime and anywhere and educators will be able to use this resource. Availability of Wi-Fi will also enable instant communication among students and also between students and teachers (Stallings, 2000). This ease to communication will bring a good relationship among the students and the teachers and team work will be encouraged and this will lead to improved success. The high speed accompanied by the Wi-Fi will also assist the student in becoming fast learners. The students will also be in a position to obtained information from the internet and do research on the assignments given by the teacher. In this way, they will be able to learn more than the books could have offered. AAMC should invest on installation of a wireless network in the campus. With the information obtained about the campus, it is clear now that there are safe places to install the routers and the adapters. Both the students and the teachers will clearly benefit on the services provided by the internet. The teachers will be able to obtain more information on what to teach the students and the students will be in a position to learn more from the internet. With all theinformation obtained through the wireless network, the success of the campus will significantly rise. It will be an interesting way of studying for the students and they will start enjoying their studies. Reference Mann, S. (2000). The wireless application protocol (WAP) a Wiley tech brief.
