Today, the healthcare industry is vastly developing and looking at the improvements in technology in the field of medical facilities healthcare administration is a line of work that has become intensively in demand. A healthcare administrator’s profile requires handling of the administration segment in the healthcare field and it is an occupation that entails multiple responsibilities along with a firm interest of wanting to serve the community furthermore; healthcare administrators have a good job outlook, with an estimated growth rate of sixteen per cent between 2008 and 2018.

Basically, a healthcare administrator puts a lot of focus on the management side of the clinics, hospitals and health institutions business; moreover, most of these facilities, especially the major ones use them for each medical department as minor businesses use only one business administrator for the entire facility. International healthcare corporations and organizations believe that healthcare administrators are in charge of keeping a facility running smoothly by controlling all aspects of the healthcare processes.

Currently, administrators with strong business management skills have a better chance at getting these opportunities as the industry continues to develop; in the United States, the average salary of a healthcare administrator is $80,240, making it the highest in medical and surgical hospitals. Significantly, majority of the healthcare administrators are said to have masters’ degrees in the field with very few entry-level positions being available for those holding bachelor’s degrees: all the same, it is required by the government that those working in nursing care facilities and assisted living facilities have a bachelor’s degree, pass a licensing examination and training program on top of attending continuing education courses.

Additionally, in the United States healthcare administrators can conduct an assessment for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification from the American Health Information Management Association which assists with career advancement and demonstrates that they have above-average knowledge in the field: however, the administrator receives the certification after passing the examination. Above all this, the healthcare administrator is required to be well equipped with a skill set that involves a combination of administration skills (mentioned earlier) and ample knowledge in relation to the medical industry since every industry operates under basic rules that are applicable for the healthcare industry.

Reflecting on the salary of the profession, it has been varying over the years due to a number of reasons that include the fact that it is assumed that the urban places are more equipped with healthcare facilities in comparison to the rural areas but the salaries are comparatively higher in the rural areas where the demand is often not met, and experience plus education and certification for the position is equally judged as the profile of the job includes a certain level of medical knowledge.

Generally, there are two identified types of administrators in any given field; ‘generalists’ who are in charge of managing or helping to manage an entire facility and ‘specialists’ who are responsible for the efficient operations of a specific department such as policy analysis, finance etc. However, to be successful in the healthcare administration profession one is expected to be able to maintain and develop professional standards, procedures, and policies for various institutional activities; moreover, they are also responsible for developing and expanding programs for scientific research, preventive medicine, medical and vocational rehabilitation, and community health and welfare.
