Extract of sample "Metastatic Multiple Myeloma"

"Metastatic Multiple Myeloma" is a great example of a paper on cancer.
The case is about the death of a 58-year-old, Harry Richard Nylander. Nylander had died at North Adelaide, South Australia on the 25thday of January 2008 as a result of metastatic multiple myeloma.

What recommendations came out of the case?

There were no recommendations that were made about the case.

What were the positives that were identified that came as a result of the case?

One of the positives that were identified as a result of the case is that Mr. Nylander was not killed. Rather, his death was a result of natural causes. The Pathological report indicates that metastatic multiple myeloma was the cause of his death. This review is highly guaranteed to be reliable as it was conducted by renowned forensic pathologists Dr. Iain McIntyre and his colleague Dr. Karen Heath (Coroners Act 2003).

Name the negatives that were identified as a result of the case?

One of the negatives that were identified as a result of the case is negligence by the correctional services. He had been in their custody since September 2000 and his possible release was in 2020 September. In addition, the CT scan that would have diagnosed the malignancy in 2004 was postponed. If the department of correctional services would have paid more attention probably his early death would have been prevented.   This is Professor Brown’s opinion in his report. He further says that the symptoms of his illness should have played a great role to the medical staff and enable them to pay more attention: However, this was not the case perhaps; Mr. Nylander wouldn’t have developed multiple myeloma (Coroners Act 2003).

What legal implications would this case have on you if you were an Enrolled Nurse?

If I was an enrolled nurse, and I am caught in the case of Mr. Nylander’s case, which involves negligence on the part of the medical staff, I would have to undergo a test on information technology.   Every enrolled nurse is expected to be technologically literate. If I was found to be illiterate then I would have to face legal consequences. This is because I would be able to conduct a CT scan, without postponing the case: Therefore, diagnosing Mr. Nylander’s myeloma earlier and embarking on treatment as soon as possible.

I would also have a legal implication of responsibility. As an enrolled nurse, I retain responsibility for my actions and I remain accountable in providing delegated nursing care. Mr. Nylander was not keenly observed by the nurses in the hospital. If he would have been keenly observed by the nurses, they would have noticed the symptoms of myeloma.

Using the Competency Standards for Enrolled Nurses, Code of Ethics, and Code of Professional Conduct identify which in your case were not met and why?

One of the competency standards that were not met in my case is that there was no Identification situation in the provision of nursing care where there is the potentiality for harm and taking appropriate actions to minimize or prevent harm to self and others. If the nurses had identified the situation of myeloma, there could be the prevention of multiple developments: Probably increasing Mr. Nylander’s lifespan. Another competency standard that was not met was that the nurses did not perform nursing intervention Performs nursing according to the agreed plan of care. In the case that the Nurses had provided proper care for Mr. Nylander, they would have noticed his symptoms and take action as fast as possible (Coroners Act 2003).
