Tactical Leadership vs. Organizational Leadership Introduction: Leader makes up for an integral part of any organization and a project undertaken. Noorganization or project can survive without the presence of an effective leader. The leader in turn adopts a specific mode of behavior and action that allows him fulfilling the requirements and challenges. For this purpose the leader may follow a specific path. This path may come in form of an authoritative form of leadership, participative form of leadership, motivational, tactical or organizational approach oriented leadership. All these have their own requirements and guidelines that enable fulfilling the tasks in a specified manner. Tactical and organizational leadership styles are two of these which are undertaken and adopted for similar aims and objectives. Nature and specialization: Each of these modes of leadership has one thing in common- achieving the defined goals and objectives, the difference is in the path following, procedures adoption, tools and techniques employment. Before understanding the two forms of leadership styles, it is imperative to define each and better understand the background and concept under which each is implemented and is most effective. The two have considerable differences between them, as well as similarities in functions, nature and execution. This paper looks into the overall relationship and individual existence and performance domain and style of each leadership style. Thesis Statement: Backed by intensive thinking and brain storming (Person, 2010, 46) and solid execution, while organizational leadership is supported by smooth decisions enforced by organizational observation and participation. Key words: Charismatic, brainstorming, participative, communication, motivational. Tactical leadership: The basic genesis of the concept of tactical derives from the previous experiences and observations. Based on all the knowledge and expertise gained, the leadership duties and responsibilities are performed accordingly. These actions may be the experience gained in individual capacity or experience based on the collective actions taken by the team and the organization which allows for experience derivation for future course of action. Variables of Tactical leadership style: Certain variables are associated with this kind of leadership style; these are the time frame and constraint, the extent of participation of the leader and the element of charisma (Porter, Angle, & Allen, 2003, 246). As a result of the prior knowledge the steps are undertaken to solve the problems and devise a strategy according to the requirements. Such form of leadership still is highly effective when there is direct contact with the sub ordinates such as military on the field interaction and war situations where there is direct need for motivation and determination impartment to the soldiers. Scope: Tactical leadership’s is not just limited to managerial activities or business enterprises, since it involves strategy and tactic based on previous knowledge, therefore it may be more effectively used in the fields such as military/ warfare, politics, education, sports and many other fields. Tactical leadership pattern may be incorporated for a small scale operation and one that demands quick responses (Rumsey, 2012, 361). Tactical leadership and military field: This form of leadership is highly effective in the military field where all the actions are based on the prior brain storming, evaluation and assessment. Pre requisites: Tactical form of leadership requires extensive record keeping in form of files or any other related information that may come in handy during the decision making. Absence of any such prior knowledge or documentation would lead to failure of overall task undertaken. Based on this need, tactical leadership demands support of the members, subordinates and officers. Thinking straight acting tactical: This phrase is highly in voyage and use in the different leadership corridors and the statement itself speaks of the impact and essence of the tactical leadership style. Tactical leadership requires strategy devising, homework prior to action, solution recommendation, alternative pathway determination. All these must be going on in the back scene and the action must be taken in an effective straight manner. Practical demonstration in form of the daily activities or the training imparting is one of the feature and requirement of the tactical leadership. Benefits: In such form of leadership, a leader serves as a motivational figure through his own work and performance. Utilizing the past resources and information and presenting and executing them in the present scenario allows him to earn favors and accolades from the members within. The element of charisma: The overall personality and charisma of the leader is highly important in this kind of leadership style. Since the leader has a direct role of participation and motivation, therefore influences can be produced only through an effective and strong personality that has the power to convince, dominate and steer through different situations and challenges that an organization may be faced with. Organizational leadership: As the name would imply, it is the leadership and guidance in the domain of organizing. This organizing may entail the individual employees involved, the processes, the techniques, the agreements and negotiations on behalf of the organization or any other form of resource collection and representation. Scope: The scope of organizational leadership is very wide and dynamic. It finds its applications in nearly all sizes of organizations, all natures of organizations and in all situations and circumstances. Other areas where the organizational leadership can be implied is that of staffing, leading, control, budgets (Dibb & Simkin, 2008, 129). In short the organizational leadership skills and techniques come in use in the day to day activities of the organizations. Personnel management, resources management, policy management, decision making management, future forecasts, budget management are few of the types that may fall directly under the domain of organizational leadership field. Organizational leadership akin to management: This form of leadership style demands management and synchronization of processes, members and all the working elements. This is more about bringing about uniformity in the course and action of the organization and its pillars of routine working. Wise counsels: Based on the organizational leadership skills, the top management makes decisions with due regard and consideration of the organizational success. They may make difficult decisions in this regard, they may perform prioritization under the same principle and policy. Elements of commonality between the two types of leaderships: Both types are subject to the presence of effective communication. Since communication is a tool that keeps that top management and members below in a direct contact, therefore both would succeed or fail in presence or absence of the tool of communication. Ethics consideration and professionalism: Both form of leadership require utmost professionalism and transparency in form of the decision making and views. Their personal inclinations and biases must not come in the way of the transparent procedures and decision making. The adherence to the code of conduct must be followed, and it must be ensured at the same time that the members subordinate also adhere to these rules and regulations stated by the organization’s policy and manifesto. Realistic goals accomplishment: The goals so set forth must be realistic and in line with the practical scenarios. This is highly incumbent upon the leaders in command and authority. Falling beyond the actual goals or drawing lines that are too idealistic lead to failure of the projects and organizational endeavors, thereby this is another common point that falls between the two. Element of separation: The two may differ in terms of the extent to which critical assessment may be require to make. With tactical leadership at times requiring bitter decisions to make and they may be based on quick responses, the organizational decisions may not demand such challenge and may allow decision making time as well as neutralizing of the situation before making any decision in circumstances of uneven incidents.
