Being a Nursing Supervisor for a Community Hospital, I find my work setting to be fostering inter-disciplinary teamwork. This is based on my observations on aspects related to hospital care delivery. Most of the patients here correlate with the workforce in a desirable manner, noting specifically that the nurse-physician and patient coordination correlate with the entire perception of the quality care given. Nurses, physicians, as well as other healthcare professionals, use a great deal of their quality time on coordination and communication of care activities in the community hospital (Wanson, 1999). Additionally, the care providers use elements like situational awareness and “speaking up” among team members, which provides the basis for understanding how the work environment can assess team performance, spot out teamwork challenges, and propose effective interventions.

I agree with the authors’ suggestion that “When individuals in the same or different disciplines communicate, conflict is inevitable.” Once the situation at hand has been defined and evaluated, appropriate communications are required to offer the base of the conflict management. Thus, the effectiveness of communication can be enhanced when positive reinforcement is recognized for agreement. In addition, nonverbal messages become consistent with verbal communications, making it possible to seek clarification of inferences, and finally, emotions can be well managed to avoid further conflicts (Beck, 2002).

It is also true that “One’s inability to handle conflict can hinder CT and IDT work. Conflict creates anxiety, which prevents higher-order thinking. The secret is not to try to eliminate conflict, but to use conflict to improve the effectiveness of teams. Strategies for improving your ability to use conflict constructively depend on confidence in your reasoning, flexibility, and intellectual integrity.” I, therefore, argue that conflict that has not been identified, realized, and effectively managed can result in unproductive use of organizational assets, injury and stress on the conflicting parties, breaking of relationships within the working area, and misdirection of the energies of the members affected by the conflict situation. However, a conflict that is managed effectively can lead to increased creativity, as well as a rethinking of practices and goals, a better informed and organized workgroup being essentially compelling: stimulating, galvanizing, and motivating.

How nurse practitioners and clinical nurse leaders fit into the concept of interdisciplinary care

These two health workers can help team members to accelerate practical skills into everyday practices through quality enhancement endeavors as a way to improve efficacious and safe healthcare. For instance, just lately, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the University Of North Carolina School Of Nursing together got a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to carry out an innovative project designed to prepare future nurses to constantly improve the safety and quality of health care systems within their working areas (Nowotny, 2001). They also assume leadership for the majority of interdisciplinary projects conducted in their countries’ public hospitals, including those of the blue highways and interstates. They identify optimal means for enriching the care offered in the more remote communities in specified nation-states. In summary, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse leaders contribute their leadership efforts and demonstrate the significance of interdisciplinary care, thus influencing health outcomes (Watson, 2008).
