Name: Tutor: Course: Date: How can you become like a nurse? Executive summary This report describes how one can become like a nurse and why I pursuing a nursing course. Nursing is a noble profession that requires special skills in order to cope with the kind of environment that nurses are exposed to and I have always been fascinated with nursing as a profession. Being a nurse; one has to be a team player, take criticism positively, have excellent organization skills, have self-drive, be a good time manager, be patient, loving, caring and be able to listen to others. The report explains how I gathered information through the research process; what it entails to be a nurse and the skills that have to be honed before anticipating a career in nursing. The introduction points out what the report is about. The first paragraph explains what it entails to be a nurse. The rest of the report shows skills that one has to demonstrate if he looks to playing a role like that of a nurse and what expect to learn about nursing. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of a nurse and skills that I will learn from studying a nursing course. More often than not a nurse works in a challenging, stressful environment with people with all kinds of needs. One has to be patient, encouraging and possess excellent organization skills in order to manage a career like nursing. There are things or skills that one has to develop in order to become like a nurse. This report describes why I have chosen to pursue a course in nursing and why I have always been fascinated with nursing. Becoming like a nurse Nursing has always interested me and I choose to pursue a course in nursing in order to find out more about nursing. My research process included interacting with few colleagues in nursing profession, reading about nursing in books and government sources and watching documentaries on nursing. Being a nurse is one of the most professionally and personally rewarding jobs that one can do. Nurses work within teams of professionals and are responsible for taking care of people who are in need. Nurses are responsible for representing the needs of patients and serving a huge variety of people with all kinds of injuries, illnesses and other problems. There are varies career opportunities that are found in the nursing fraternity (Fraser et al, 2014). A qualified nurse can advance his or her career and go on to specialize in other areas like intensive care, coronary care, aged care, occupational healthcare, mental healthcare, paediatrics, surgical nursing, accident and emergency nursing, midwifery and remote community nursing. Furthermore, there are opportunities to get into other areas like management roles, research or teaching. Becoming a nurse requires commitment, personal sacrifice and self-drive, however, there are things like one can do to become like a nurse in everyday life. I adore the role played by nurses and that is why I have chosen a career in nursing. Despite the different tasks that the nurses have to take on every day, there are general skills that anyone wanting to a nurse or emulate the life of nurse must have. To be like a nurse I must work on my social and people skills, and have good time management skills. Nurses must have good social and people skills besides excellent time management skills (Chambers, 2012). One has to be good to people, caring and able to listen and understand other people’s problems. A nurse gets transcribe what the patients do through to doctors. I must perfect must listening skills and be patient with everyone in need of my help. I must be a great team player in order to emulate what nurses have to go through. Nurses must be good at teamwork as well as working with other allied health practitioners like doctors, peers, social workers, physios, radiographers, chaplains, meal crews, wardsmen among others (Scanlon, 2011). One has to be team player and get along with other people. Relating well with people from different backgrounds and cultures is important as playing the role of a nurse. There are ethical considerations like honesty, integrity and serving people selflessly that nurses have to possess. Nurses have to abide by the code of ethics of their profession. Nurses have excellent organizational skills for the purpose of formulating plans of care. Individually I have to show organizational skills in planning my work and organizing other people in groups. I have to schedule my work and accomplish every task in order and on time. I must be able to work in challenging environment and under pressure from my seniors or leaders. Nurses must have a disposition that gives them the courage and zeal to work on stressful, problematic or frantic environmental without losing their heads or freaking out (Chambers, 2012). I have to work in stressful environments without losing my cool or breaking down. In order to become like a nurse one has to take criticism positively. Nurses take constructive criticism without losing their temper or bursting into tears. One has to be willing to correct his or her mistakes and admit when he is in the wrong. I have chosen to pursue this course in order to learn some of the skills that nurses have and I expect to be a better person after the course and learn how to serve people and my country in whatever capacity. Conclusion Nursing is a noble profession that has a demanding role and requires a lot of commitment, drive and physical fitness. There are skills and behavioral characteristics that allow one to become like a nurse. Being caring and good to people and listening to their problems is a good start. Having organizational skills and being able to work in stressful and challenging environments further demonstrates how one can cope as a nurse or becoming like a nurse. Like a nurse I must love my job and do it out of self will than being coerced by other circumstances like need for money or to please other people. I look forward to studying the course with zeal and determination.
