Birth Control : The Right Way and the Wrong Way It is the responsibility of human being to celebrate life in its fullness, preserve it and to nurture it. The death culture prevailing in the society has its pressure in the life of a common man also. Those who consider life as the greatest ‘gift of God’ and family as a place to live together in understandings and in unity, which is open towards the need of others, only can lift up these values in the society they live in. We can simply state statistical analysis of the number of children killed by their own parents each year, without coming deep into the causes of it. The most important obsession a man should bear in mind is that human life is the “gift of God” and no man has the supremacy to destroy it. Only for that reason everyman has the obligation to respect, preserve and nurture it. So it should be stated that abortion should be made illegal. Mahatma Gandhi advocated non violence and was against the killing of any form of life. He expressed his views about abortion and wrote “It seems to be clear as day light that abortion should be a crime”. In this context the term abortion should be defined first. It is medically defined as the “end of pregnancy before viability”. It can also be defined as the removal of a growing fetus from the womb of a mother. Now we should remember that life begins when an ovum and sperm join together. It is scientifically proved by the Geneva Conference Of Human Rights and World Conference of Doctors. The researches prove that the fetus has all the features of a living human being. The physical features like the height, fingerprint blood group, color, sex etc have been determined at the time of fertilization itself. Thus fetus is a complete man having all the peculiarities of his own heredity. Dr Jerome Lejeune known as ‘The father of Modern Genetics ‘also testified that human life begins at conception before the Louisian Legislature’s house Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice on June 7,1990. It is a common man having a functioning heart and all other external and internal organs and also having emotions. If it is so, the killing of a fetus is crime equal to the killing of a complete human being. One of the world’s renowned personalities who otherwise known as mother of the destitute expressed her views about abortion ,”What is taking place in America, is a war against the child and if we accept that the mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another. According to John C Willke “abortion at any stage of pregnancy is the immoral killing of an unborn baby.” The next point we should consider is that if any crime has legally approved naturally that will increase in number. This is true in the case of abortion also. It is quite unlawful to display arguments supporting woman to personalize the problem. But abortion should be considered as a social problem and not as a problem of woman as per the arguments of some woman liberation organization. The youth find it a way out of pregnancy, which is against what should be conveyed to the moral development of the society. It is the responsibility of the elder generation to convey the message of keeping sex within the boundary of marriage, to the present youth. The new generation should be given detailed scientific teachings of abortion in order to make them aware of the different methods adopting for this process and its mental and physical consequence in the person who do this crime. The horrible process adopted for removal of fetus should be explained to the students from the secondary level as part of sex education. They include administration of special herbs ,the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure and other techniques. The person who does abortion has much more mental pain than the persons who accepts their child. Even the cry of a child will remind them of the cruel action they did and the mother is never calmed from the guilt feeling. This is the fate of many women after abortion. There are reports from women that they suffer from feeling of guilt and confusion. Dr Ian Kent states that many woman feel deep loss and pain for the child that “should have been”. (Kent 1989, 6). The next point come to mind is that if we legalize abortion the possibility of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide will be greater. The recent news about the finding of “dumped fetus” in India can only be read with fright of the situation. (BBC News 19 April 2010). Most of the reasons pointing out for abortion are personnel. There are also arguments about the criminal nature of illegal babies, population bomb and unwanted child. The quality of life cannot be raised by these illegal actions. The history of the nations which legalized abortions is not supportive of these opinions. There are surrogate methods for all other arguments which support abortion. It is crucial to develop a culture which does not value life in this era. Abortion can only viewed as a legal murder. If abortion is supported, the killing of deceased and older generation will also be come under law in course of time. Thus it will lead to the development of a specific civilization, which can be called a “civilization of death “. According to Pope John Paul 11 “The law of God is univocal and categorical with respect to human life. God commands:” You shall not kill” No human lawgiver can therefore assert: it is permissible for you to kill, you have the right to kill, or you should kill.” Work cited Gandhi M K , Birth Control : The Right way and the Wrong Way, Ahmadabad, Navajeevan Press , 1959 Kent, Ian, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, New York,1989 Pope John Paul 11, Letter to Families, 1994 Read More
