The Importance Of Interpersonal Communication In Business In your own words, describe the core elements of interpersonal communication. There are four important elements in interpersonal communication. The transmitter is that which transfers the message from the source to the one the message is intended for. In this sense, the transmitter could be the speaker. The receptor is that which receives the message. This is the listener or audience. Of course, messages would be that which needs to be relayed from speaker to listener.

Messages could be short or long, and can be made with words or without. Meanwhile, channels would be the ways employed in sending the message. These can be a speech, an email, etc. These could also be a hug, a kiss, a handshake and many more. In your experience, where in the process is communication most likely to break down? Provide an example. In my experience, communication can break down at any point. For example, if the transmitter does not know exactly what to say, the message will be cryptic for the receptor.

If the message has a problem in the lexical, construction or grammar aspect, then this can also lead to ineffective communication. If the transmitter is not particular to a channel, then the wrong channel might be used for a target audience. For example, if the message is for children, the medium used should be something appropriate for children and something childrenalways see. Otherwise, the communication would not be effective because it did not reach the intended audience. Have you ever experienced a cultural barrier to communication?

If so, how did you overcome the barrier? If not, how would you try to overcome such a barrier work, at school, or in your personal life? Yes, I have experienced a cultural barrier to communication. When I traveled to Asia, I was exposed to a variety of things I am not accustomed to as a Westerner. Each time I tried to buy something, I had to demonstrate with my hands or resort to getting my dependable dictionaries or notes so the locals would understand what I wanted. The cultural barrier was not only limited to communicating with words.

Some gestures that may mean nothing to me meant a lot in Asia. For example, I use my hands a lot when communicating with people who do not understand me because I speak a different language. However, whenever I speak to someone from India I try and keep my left hand to myself if I could. I am very careful about this most especially with older Indian people because I had learned that one’s left hand is considered dirty in India. I have yet to experience a cultural barrier at work or at school.

Nevertheless, when the time comes I am positive my experiences when I traveled would help me communicate with people from other cultures. Although some gestures may have specific meanings to a certain country, many of the gestures I have learned have the same meaning in any country so I can use these.
