A Contemporary Art Space Exhibition - Case Study Example

 Art Space Trip Report The art space is where audiences meet the artists and the ideas of our times. It was established in 1983 as an artistic-run dedicated to the presentation of experimental art in a critical context. In the same year, a major exhibition was opened. It was A Different Perspective Curated by Terence Maloon in conjunction with the Multicultural Artistes Agency at the temporary location in Surry Hills. This was on target to the demand for space by artists. Artspace later relocated to its current location at the Gunnery in oolloomooloo.The site is known for its rich history. The art space is recognised for the production and presentation of visual arts in an expanded field. Through its exhibition, studio, symposia, workshop and publishing platforms, art space encourages new ideas, risk and experimentation. Its aim is focused on supporting the development and presentation of contemporary art. VISIT It is well positioned in the East Sydney Precinct along Sydney’s arts and cultural ribbon. EastSydney is particular in arts precinct that is situated to some of Sydney’s major art galleries, museums, commercial and independent galleries,artist-run spaces and creative hubs. HOW TO ACCESS The arts space is easily accessible by public transport or a short 10-minute walk from Kings Cross Station. EXHIBITIONS An Imprecise Science (Exhibition Dates 29 March-24 May 2015 It explores how with idiosyncratic intent we each determine our processes for embodying experience or tracking life lived. The engraftment of space, value and the gesture of left authority definitions depicts a special story to show how the apparel was no permanent and was like any other material. The frailty and collapse commingle with resilience and forms of material, physical and psychic ascendance. The 13 Australian and international artists are used to present work in a cross-generational collective. They also work installation, video, performance, sculpture, painting, sound, and word. The main aim of this exhibition is to prompt a reawakening of a familiar space that is at once both public and highly personal. New Initiatives at the Art Space Visitors are now greeted at the art space entrance by new ideas platform. It is an adaptive program area situated at the entrance to the organization. The ideas platform serves as a testing ground for experimental. There is also open-ended and expanded the creative practice. It has a program that focuses on process as much than the outcome. The platform presents a spectrum of projects from artists ‘books and independent publishing initiatives to occupations and performances. Workshops, screenings, discussions and socially engaged and combined practices are also involved. Art space acknowledges Andrew Cameron AM and Cathy Cameron for their generous support. LA-based artist Eve Fowler is the first to activate the ideas platform. She is known for her proactive posters and billboard works. Launching of Studios Beginning of February 2015, Art Space launched the non-residential studio program as free for artists. This new initiative acknowledges both the necessity for a workshop program in Sydney that offers space for artists. The program lays the foundations for a more dynamic relationship between artists and art space programs and networks. The organization will engage 42 artists across different generations and art forms to undertake one-year residence. This resourcefulness places access, generosity and experimentation at the core of the organization’s programming and operational activities. Art space also connects artists and audiences with vital national and international discourses. There will also be a launch of the International Visitors program. It will connect Australian artists with international networks to provide a critical context and space for the creation of new work. The organization involves a number of recognized individuals. They include Walead Beshty, who holds exhibitions at NewYork. Beshty’s work has been included in upcoming and recent exhibition art. The work also includes a strong focus on material and the inherent conditions of materials such as glass and metal as well as how objects operate within the art market and material culture at large. His copper surrogate must be touched by bare hand during their installation so that natural oils mark the copper surface and cause it to oxidize. The handling of the work creates a tangible trace that becomes part of the works ‘history and visual presence. His work often reflects their physical interaction with the world and the material transformation caused by movement from place to place. Nina Camell she has sculptures consisting of materials such as chewing gum and humble nails or used for pragmatic purposes including telecommunications cables and concrete. She is particularly drawn to the scientific and often incorporates electricity and atmospheric elements in her work. Her unorthodox practice sits somewhere between materials or rather taps into both realms to unveil intimate energies and different forms of knowledge. Natalya Hughes deals mainly with painting, digital media, and installation. Her practice is consistently concerned with maligned decorative and ornamental traditions and their association with feminine, the body, and excess. The work has been shown in many shows for example Women at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, and Sexes at Performance Space. She has also done recent solo exhibitions. They include Looking Thrice at Milani Gallery, Brisbane; Bachelor’s pad at Alaska Projects, Sydney. Bibiana Jancic is a Sydney based artist who primarily works correctly to produce large scale architectural interventions. Her work has been shown both in Australia and internationally in a range of contemporary art spaces, independent galleries, and festivals. Recent solo projects have include Contra, Firstdraft, Sydney.Her work has recently been curated group exhibitions at Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney.Ragnar Kjartansson draws on the history of film, music, theatre, visual culture and literature for his video installations, durational performances, drawing, and painting. Recent solo exhibitions have been carried out at the New Museum, New York, and many other places. Alicja Kwade draws on the final scene of Christopher Nolan’s film Inception for her eponymous video work in which a spinning top seems to turn for eternity, suspended in impossible, perpetual movement. Kwade has long been involved with value systems and with examining issues of inherently subjective concepts such as space and time. Her work explores the structural properties of everyday objects. Standard materials of little to no value such as glass, wood, and copper are transformed via elaborate, alchemical operations. Upcoming and recent solo exhibitions have been held at Kunsthalle St.Gallen, Switzerland. Bridie Lunney develops her work intuitively and in relation to the site of presentation. Engaging the given context, physical conditions, and materials. Putting together practices of sculpture, jewellery and performance. Lunney sees the body as a conduit between our emotional and psychological selves and the physical world. Her recent projects include There Are These Moments, Studio 12 Project Space, Gertrude Contemporary. This endless becoming and many more. Kate Newby often appropriates the materials and vernaculars of architecture, creating handmade, crudely constructed sculptural interventions that are simultaneously against and at one with a given environment.
