Quantitative Study Evaluation No: Quantitative Study Evaluation Evaluation of the The title of the topic is “Quantitative Study Evaluation” in which I will discuss the qualities, worth and importance of quantitative study. In quantitative method, data is collected through scientific research method while qualitative method consists of observation by looking people’s action, interviewing and recording etc. The title of the research paper is ‘do they read for pleasure; Reading Habits of College Students in Spare Time’. This title shows the relation between reading habits of students in a spare time and because of this habit students get good marks in their field (Creswell, 2008). This title is more suitable for qualitative research in which investigates how much students enjoyed while reading. In this research this title would be better that ‘reading habits of students in a spare habits and its impact in getting highest scores in colleges’. Evaluation of the Problem Statement The problem statement is that what is the relation between reading habits in a spare time and getting good marks in the studies? There is a strong relation between the reading habits for taking pleasure and getting academic achievement. These two statements are the problem statements which are written by Jude Gallick. Evaluation of the Review of the Literature Jude Gallick has done lot of search on the relation between reading habits of students in a spare time and academic achievement. The first study was done by Krashen who was fifteen years old used in the time of this. He found that students who read in the spare time write essays in a better way as compared to other students and this a proof of academic achievement. The second study which is done by Applebe in 1978. Applebe was twenty-one years old when Gallick was doing that research. Applebe found that good writers in a school read fourteen books in one summer as compares to the average student who read eleven books in a year. This is also a proof that students who read fourteen books in a summer must get achievement in his or her studies. One more study on that correlation which was done by Anderson, Wilson and Felding found that in general fifth grade student read higher level of books in their spare time when they are in their schools. Greaney, Hegarty, Foertsh, Taylor, Frye, and Maruyama have done research on that topic and found that reading in a spare time contributes the mental and physical growth of the students and this research is also a proof that reading in a spare time enhances the students achievements in their studies. The next which is done by Gallick on the males and females that how much time both spent in reading in their spare time? After this study he found that study in the spare time is on decline in the middle school years. Gallick found next study which was done in 1961; it was on the impact of watching television on the reading books. It is little bit irrelevant study. Witty found that students spent most of their time in their school and they do not have a time of watching television. So after their schooling they watch television in their spare time instead of reading. Greaney and Hegarty found that there is no relation between time spent on watching television and reading books. All the studies have shown that the student who spends their spare time in reading are the good writers and this is a proof of their academic achievement. Evaluation of the Purpose and Research Questions The linkage between the research studies combining the collegians studies and the reading habits. The aim of the research is to find the bond between the two variables. The first question is how the pleasure reading effect the time of the college students. The answer to the first question helps to find the answer to the second question, which is how the spent time on reading is linked to the academic accomplishments. Evaluation of Data Collection The survey was handed over to 135 students in Texas at a private college. In my opinion that if the research sample was conducted at a larger scale, more accurate and more data could be collected. The research was provided to the English classes, both to the recent class and to the students that study in the later years that will maintain the research addressing different groups and a true behavior of the students can be seen in terms of academic achievements. I think that some students will not give the correct information about the reading habits as the survey is given by the class instructor. The students have three age groups, 72 students were in age group of 17-20 years, 35 students were in the age group of 21-24 years and 16 students are in the age group of 25-29 years while the remaining students are thirty and above. However, 70 were male students and 65 were female student. Evaluation of Data Analysis and Findings The collected data needs to be managed into various categories that could help to find the answers of research questions. The information gathered in accordance with the first question evaluates that most students spent more time reading in vacations rather than reading in class. The information gathered with respect to the second question suggests that there is a little association between the GPA and reading for pleasure during the classes. However, the reading during the vacations and the GPA are much associated to each other (Gallick, 1999). Evaluation of the Writing The research paper is written in an excellent way. It was written simple and comprehensive manner that is easily understandable for the reader. The language of the research paper is so that anyone who wants to use these surveys in their research can easily use that without facing any difficulty. This study has written from the personal point of view and is written for the readers for at least collegiate students. Any other reader might have face some difficulty while reading terms and statistics in that study but the readers who know and understands terms and research design could easily understand this study. Conclusion In my opinion, the research design and methodology was effective in the way that information gathered from the sources remains to be valid in accordance with the previous researches made on the similar subjects. The design of the research was simple and easily understandable. As the research is made considering the students as the subject of the research, it could benefit the students as well as the teachers. The research well enlightened the problem and issues faced by the students and data collected at various stages simplifies the research to the questions. In my opinion, the research focused a narrow point but coved a broad topic. If the sample size of the research is increased, the research could be made more valid.
