Hot, Flat and Crowded Energy poverty is the lack or has no access to the modern energy services. Families living in energy poor areas such as sub – Saharan Africa and South Asia use inefficient forms of fuels such as the burning of biomass and the use of wood, dung, agricultural residue and coal to heat and cook their meals. Using these inefficient forms of fuels will cause death, health risks, air pollution and climate change. The use of these inefficient fuels generates black carbon which causes respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, and black carbon is a major contributor to global warming. United Nations reports say that if there is no action taken to this issue, by 2030, an estimated of 4,000 people around the world will die everyday due to toxic smoke and indoor fires from the use of these inefficient forms of fuel. Global warming is an impact or effect of being energy poor in a hot world. As stated above, families living in energy poor areas use inefficient forms of fuel for their daily needs which produces black carbon which contributes to global warming. Being energy poor has a huge impact in a hot world because it will elevate its augmentation of global warming. There are a lot of ways that clean energy can make a crowded world more comfortable. Using clean energy such as electricity is beneficial because of the following reasons. It is a renewable source of energy; there are other sources of energy that isn’t renewable such as petroleum, coal and ethanol, once depleted it will take so much time to replenish. Another reason is that it will not pollute the environment; fuels like oil, coal and petroleum are harmful to the environment because they release a lot of gas to the atmosphere. And lastly, electricity doesn’t need to be stored, people can just switch on and off their appliances anytime they want without storing energy, while hydrogen, another form of energy, needs to be stored and has the tendency to pre-ignite if it is not stored in its proper conditions. America has the responsibility to go green because America is ranked as the second – largest source of emitting greenhouse gasses; America has emitted 6.12 billion of greenhouse gas in 2007, 5.92 billion in 2008 and 5.5 billion in 2009. President Barack Obama announced in January 2010 that the Federal Government will reduce 28 percent of its emission of greenhouse gas by 2020. What Freidman means when he said that green is the new red, white and blue is that different nations should be more geostrategic, geoeconomic, capitalistic and patriotic in our lifestyle. Friedman’s vision is to change America and other nation’s way of thinking and using of energy in order to conserve our environment and to fuel our future in a cleaner and greener way so that the young generation could also enjoy the world we live in. Ethics of conservation are values and disciplines that are used to protect, preserve and conserve our natural world. Ethics of conservation and Friedman’s concept of “Green is the new red, white and blue’ shares the common vision which is to conserve the over-all well-being of the environment and the human beings. The inherent problem in rewarding utilities for their capital expenditures is the time needed to achieve the abundant, clean, cheap and reliable electrons which could take 30-50 years and the support and investment needed to research and develop this new energy system. Freidman feels that the pricing system for utilities is dumb because it has failed to differentiate between how the electricity is generated (whether it be oil against solar) or the time of day it has been generated (if it’s at its peak or off peak). The innovations in the utilities industry are almost nonexistent because the research and development didn’t have that much support and investment that it needed. Electric utilities in the U.S. only had 0.15 percent in revenue in 2007. Friedman claims that “we haven’t really tried to achieve the needed exponential innovations in energy and engineering”. Price signals, cap and trade a system, carbon taxes and fee bates are the means to launch the 10,000 innovations in clean energy garages and 10,000 laboratories. They can spur innovation in the energy sector because they will generate the amount of money needed for the said innovations and laboratories by setting a price floor that would compete in the market. Friedman feels that regulation is important in the success of Code Green because it will find solutions to our green challenges. The most effective regulations are out greening the competition, putting an end to waste and preserving biodiversity. Out greening competition is where we think about generating more growth, mobility, housing, comfort, security, enjoyment and packaging from the use of the cleanest electrons and fewer resources. Putting and end to waste is where we make use of our waste product. Instead of recycling them we reutilize them with the use of reusable or biodegradable components, they call this “cradle-to-cradle”. And lastly, preserving biodiversity, this is where we need to have a strategy on preserving the Earth’s biodiversity because it has the capacity to destabilize the climate. Code Green can help eradicate poverty because one of its aims is to invest in utilities which can conserve energy and save money. In the long – run these utilities will lessen the usage of energy and it will also lessen the expense needed for energy. Green Revolution is like Civil Rights Movement because it will lead to the improvement of our environment and the people’s well being. Leadership is crucial because we need a character with authority that has the will and focus to do anything to enforce and implement a Clean Energy System.
