Dear Sir/Madam, My name is ………………………………………….I am a student at South Bank University, undertaking my final year in a Nursing and Social Work degree course. In order to fully complete the programme my course requires that I undertake a research proposal focusing on parents’ experiences, views, and opinions about services offered in Accident and Emergency (A&E) settings for their children, who have learning disabilities, during admission and discharged. The research is qualitative study, utilizing a phenomenological approach of semi-structured interviews of approximately 15-30 minutes duration. The chosen sampling method is convenience sample, as I will approach the participants on the ward (A&E /children emergency setting). The University aim of the course unit intends Joint practice students like my self to develop research skills and awareness that will inform our future practice, and potentially improve the quality of life to parent/carer’s with disabled child that access A&E hospital settings. It will also allow us to be more valuable and effective practitioners. The research is to last for 12 weeks and will take no longer than this time scale. Additionally, the project is expected to reflect the views, opinions and lived experience of the participants about the service they are currently receiving and as well as past services offered to them. (N=10 participants will be drawn from St Thomas and St Guys Hospital in London Borough of Lambeth and the participants must be parents and guardians looking after disabled children with either mild to moderate learning disabilities. The research is not funded. It is under the supervision of a senior lecturer from Research in Practice named……………………. All information that is gathered from this study will be treated with the utmost confidentiality under data act protocols. I would therefore be grateful if you could support me in carrying out this research independently. Any additional support or assistance that facilitates the research will also be greatly appreciated. I am doing a research proposal in regards to parents looking and caring for a disabled child lived and the provision of services offered to them in Accident and Emergency Hospital setting in St Thomas and St Guy’s hospital in the London Borough of Lambeth. My chosen topic is to investigate parents’ lived experiences, views and opinions about services offered to their children with a learning disability in A&E and children’s service emergency settings, either during admission or discharge. I will go through and ask you a few questions, using an interview guide so I don’t drift away from the topic, to best gain your perception, views and opinions about service offered to you in the A&E setting.The interview will last approximately 15-30 minutes depending on your views.
