The Safest Companies in America Criteria use by EHS today to rate company safety programs A study carried out by theEHS today reveals that top performing companies in America maintains high standards of safety. To determine the safety standards of the companies, they had to use the following criteria to arrive at the conclusion. Firstly, they determined the level of support provided by the management in ensuring that safety standards are maintained and whether the employees were given a chance to participate in maintaining safety.

Secondly, the EHS looked at the innovative solutions put in place by different companies to counter any unforeseen safety challenges. Thirdly, EHS conducted a test to determine the level of injury and illness rates at different companies. This was meant to determine whether the injury and illness rates were below average in these companies. The fourth criteria was to determine the level of safety training programs set up by the companies to counter any security issues. They then conducted a fifth test to determine how preparedness the companies were in terms of prevention measures.

The sixth criteria was to determine how effective, value of safety is communicated within the company and finally, the various ways by which the Americas companies prove the payback of the safety processes. Once all this processes have been carried out, a ranking was done to determine the company that had the best safety programs (Smith 2). Similarities and differences in methods used by the winning companies (ACCO Brands Corp & Buffalo Gap Inst) in achieving safety excellence Similarities Both companies have ensured that safety maintenance is incorporated as a culture in all the departments.

They have also ensured that there is teamwork participation both by the management and employees in maintenance of safety. In both cases training on safety, measures are conducted regularly to enlighten employees. It is also common that employees are empowered to ensure that they maintain safety at workplace. The companies have also ensured that there are effective safety communication programs in place. Both companies have also a disaster preparedness programs with the establishment of health facilities to handle any emergencies (Smith 3).

Differences The difference exist between the companies because whereas in the ACCO Brand Corp company The top level management carry out periodic visits to various locations within the company to assess the safety situation, the Buffalo Garp to management does not do this. Ideas Learnt that are most important to my learning as a future safety professional As a future safety professional, I have learnt a great deal from Americas safety winning companies in a number of ways. I have learnt that for security and safety standards to be maintained in a more effective way, there must be commitment to safety both by the top managements and the employees.

It is also important that the employees be empowered to ensure that they maintain safety at work place. Safety preparedness strategies must also be put in place for any eventuality and ensuring that safety training and communication programs are available (Smith 3).
