The privacy concerns in data and information handling have been realized at individual, institutional, corporate, or government levels. Information-driven professions have had to deal with privacy issues at different levels of professional practice.

Sources of information are diverse, especially with the persistent advancement of information technology. Vast information is readily available to users, and so are the means of passing this information (Schwartz and Solove, 2008, p.388). With this, the extent to which confidential information remains within the required limits has been threatened. The underlying burden of addressing privacy issues has been purely borne by information professionals. However, amid these complications, privacy and confidentiality in information handling cannot be said to be lost.

Technological sophistication in the information context has not disregarded this issue either (Solove, et al. 2006, p.121). The profession itself and the professionalism of all stakeholders have been put to task in the process. The profession aims at simplifying information availability to maximum users at a time, while the professionals have information variables to account for; privacy issues. Therefore, privacy issue links the profession to the professionals in that field.
