Global business management My name: Course Instructor Institution City/state Date Introduction In organisation contexts, there are certain skills and abilities that help individual to interact and carry out duties effectively. The same individual and interpersonal skills are required at work places to foster understanding between workers and the management. Therefore, degree courses like Global Business Management have been instrumental in training and developing students for the job market or working environments. The course is of great importance to me since i want to expand my skills in management and overall job skills. Global business management has been important since the global economic environment has been rapidly changing hence the need to stay competitive in such global scale. There are certain elements like self-awareness and emotional intelligence that help individuals to deal with situations. These elements are thus transferred to work places to allow individuals handle any situations that may arise. This piece of work shows how I have utilised the knowledge learned in class to help me in my career path. The report also shows how I applied some of my interpersonal skills as an intern to try to bring a change in an organisation The example: my work experience The work experience has been running afternoon hotel internship which helped me with self-management. Self-management is critical since it helped me in meeting deadlines. The other activities included making timetables and setting out rotas as well as organising ingredients needed for afternoon teas. Servicing helped me improve my skills in customer relations that included dealing with complaints and decision making. Most important was focusing customer retention by ensuring repeat custom and that the services were memorable to them. In comparison to other tea rooms, I noticed differences. For instance, they served hard sandwiches since they had been making them in bulk in the morning hours and not fresh like our department did. One way of satisfying customers was by asking them their dietary needs so as to get everything delivered in time. For instance, most of my customers had wheat, lactose and gluten intolerance. Self-organisation and time management were some of my shortcomings that prompted me to set tasks and pace me so as to deliver tasks within the stipulated time. When attending the internship, I had a good self-control thus making me feel part of the team since I would never let them down with my full focus. The whole trip motivated me but I had a challenge of adapting to new things like raft challenge since it was never enjoyable to me since I was not perfect on it. Learning take time but it takes self-reassessment like having to endure the learning process so as to be like the rest of the team. The internship and class knowledge has also helped me to excel in the course tasks like project management. One important project for any management course is the business plan. It is an area that has been hectic to me due to its complexity in organisation. It involved team work hence managing everyone in the team was rather hectic since roles were different in the team. Hard work was the basis to success therefore, everyone in the team dedicated their time thus we realised the best out of our project. The career choice or path Global Business Management My success in group work and internship was driven by the skills and concepts I learnt from my business management course. Since it is my career path, the course teaches about certain employability skills like professional attitudes, professional behaviours and professional skills that are applicable to any career path. In this reflection, I choose to discuss in details how Global business management will help me achieve my goals. This course focuses on awareness of others and states ways of bringing various functions of the organisation together. Critically, businesses can only stay competitive when individuals realise the need to compete at the global scale by ensuring that they evolve in terms of management skills so as to tap emerging opportunities and global markets. When I chose the course, there were some fundamental issues that were of concern to me. One of them was a clear comprehension of what global business is really. By definition, GBM presents practices and fundamental principles of conducting businesses at global scale by evaluating business opportunities effectively and allocating resources accordingly to meet individual business goals within the global environment. Therefore, there course is posed to train me into a globally competitive individual who will be able to march skills against organisation requirement. Elements of global business management: employability skills Professional attitude Employability skills are personal attributes that enables an individual to effectively undertake job tasks. One of them is professional attitude. It is the way a person approaches his or her job or career. Therefore, individuals ought to have positive attitude towards their career. When I was an intern in the Bramely Lakes, it took positive attitude to cope up with the scenario. I was working in production and servicing department that had many challenges. The hotel job involved self-commitment where I had to meet both organisation and customer needs. Besides, it is not easy to deal with the customers as they always feel that they are right in every instance. Therefore, personal attribute like positive attitude is what it takes to handle such a situation. One of the elements of job attitude is being initiative. This involves taking of action unprompted or unforced. It basically concerns personal drive for certain actions. For instance in our department, my team would prepare meals in time to meet the deadlines without being supervised by the hotel management. This skill helped in delivering quality services to the customers and they would repeat their actions of buying at our department. The other element of this employment skill is ethical sensitivity. In my case, it was the driving force behind success in service delivery. For instance, there are ethical issues surrounding food consumption. Most of the customers in my department had certain food habits that are ethically right to consider. They were for instance, sensitive to certain foods like wheat, lactose and gluten. It would have been ethically wrong to service to them foods which they had high intolerance for (Healey & Jenkins, 2000, p. 186-190). Professional behaviour The other employability skill that employers look for is professional behaviours. Employees must behave in a way that is professionally acceptable. One of them is self-management, a behaviour that takes centre stage in every organisational context. Some scholars argue that self-management is one of the inborn characteristics while others argue that it individuals can learn it from their work environments and personal experiences. Self-management also begins at school where individuals learn to do their assignment in time and meat project deadlines. It is an employment skill that helped me a lot while at internship since I was able to organise myself to prepare the ingredients in time and thus the afternoon teas were delivered in time. This was one of the main areas that the management applauded me for. Therefore, this employability is the ability to work efficiently and i a well-structured manner. As I reflect on myself, I was able to structure my tasks and deliver them according the organisation needs by ensuring that my work was efficiently done. The other aspect of professional behaviour is critical analysis. Though I was faced with no problem situation, it is imperative for me to recognise the need of being able to handle some critical situations in the work environments. However, I was able to make some perfect decisions using my management professional skill when preparing and figuring out the time tables (Healey & Jenkins, 2000, p. 194). My professional skills Professional skills are rather learned through environmental encounters rather than being possessed by an individual. One of the important professional skills is political sensitivity. In this case, an individual needs to appreciate how an organisation works. As an intern in Bramley Lakes, I was able to value its organisational culture. In Bramley Lakes for instance, I was able to appreciate the role of executives in managing its stuff. Therefore, I was able to work well under directions from our supervisor. In this case, I saw myself as having a great value for the organisation that I worked for. The other professional skill is problem solving. It requires individuals to able to select and use the appropriate methods of finding solutions in problem situations. Problem solving is one skills learned in Global Business Management. On other hand, negotiation skills are also learned in this course which basically group working scenarios like business planning process as group projects (Healey & Jenkins, 2000) Learning models: Honey and Mumford learning style There are certain learning models that are covered in GBM that enables individuals to get the best out of their management training. One of such models is the Honey and Mumford’s model which was developed from the Kolb’s model. This model was developed after a detailed research on behavioural tendencies of the managers. The model has four stages of having experience, reviewing such experience, concluding from experience and finally planning the next step. The figure below shows Honey and Mumford’s model. It is simply a learning cycle that has four elements of activist, reflector, concluding and pragmatist. In this case, the activist part involves my experience in business management. I have been able to do certain activities like serving in the hotel. On the other hand, the learning style can also be applicable in my course where I have been able to undertake certain task like business plan process. The second stage is reviewing my experience which inference into my strengths and weaknesses. I have considerate abilities in group work tasks and relationship management since I have been able to retain many customers in our tea service department at the Bramley Lakes hotel. In contrast, I had considerable problem with time management and learning of new things since it takes me time to develop interest in doing something. Theorist concept in this case will involve my conclusion of personal reflection. In this case, the model will help me to identify certain areas in my career path that require improvement. Finally, as illustrated in the below diagram, the pragmatist concept will involve planning the steps that i will do to improve myself (Healey & Jenkins, 2000, p. 186-190). Source: Swailes, S. & Senior, B., 1999 Discussion and conclusion As explained in the above discourse, global business management comes in handy at enabling people to achieve their personal objectives in particular and those of organizations and companies they are working for in general. It is important to conceptualize that, one of the concerns is to achieve satisfaction considering the rapidly changing global economic environment. As such, there is need to remain competitive in the global arena which can be done by have the relevant levels of emotional intelligence and self-awareness so as to deal with situations. However, various parameters that count include having the right professional attitudes, behaviors and skills. As explained in the above, I throughout my work experience applied such skills that enable me to achieve my goals. This is for instance in regard to self-management that necessitated me to set targets and timelines within which to achieve them. During the time, I was capable of retaining clientele base and as well attract new ones. On the other hand, global business management enabled me to build self-control especially during the learning process. This made me understand that learning takes time but it has to be endured. Project management is another skill that is worth noting in which case concepts of business planning comes in handy. In that case, one is capable is handling complex situations. In addition, it is worth noting the various learning models which are applicable in global business management; they include Honey and Mumford learning styles. They facilitate individuals in getting the best and they are based on Kolb’s cycle. This comprises of four important stages which are having the relevant experience, reviewing the experience, making conclusion out of it and planning as the final stage. Those are some of the skills that render one to be employability and even if one is not able to secure a job formally, they can be applied in individual enterprises.
