Celia Milne notes that because of society’s obsession with an unrealistic model of beauty, eating disorders, cosmetic surgeries, and smoking patterns among women have significantly increased. The strengths of this essay are its use of diverse sources in supporting her arguments and providing possible solutions to body image problems, while its main weakness is its writing style that tends to be disorganized, due to lack of clear transition sentences. Milne uses different sources to support her argument.

She interviews several doctors who have had the same body image problems, or have experiences in dealing with these problems, which provide ethos to what these experts are saying. Dr. Joan Johnston, 48, an Edmonton family physician, for instance, suffered from anorexia from her late teens until adult years. Milne also cites the National Eating Disorder Information Centre for statistics on eating disorders. She also proposes a way of dealing with body image problems, such as through acceptance and developing the right coping tools, so that people understand that they have to accept what their bodies are without harshly judging themselves.

She interviews people with eating disorders who have learned how to deal with their body image issues. Milne’s writing, however, is disorganized. She should have used more transition signals to begin and describe her points.
