Statistics Student’s Name Institution Question one (a) Which variable(s) are mentioned from this survey of Australian men? From the survey on measuring the willingness of men to spent against the women willingness to spend. The variable being measured here are: i. Willingness. ii. Spending (b) For each variable that you identify, explain whether it is nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio. For each variable, explain whether it is discrete or continuous In the study, “Willingness” is an ordinal scale. An ordinal scale can be described as the measure of order of the values as to what is important and significant while giving the differences between each one of them cannot be quantified. It measures non-numerical concepts like satisfaction, happiness willingness among others. Spending- on the other hand can be described as a ratio scales since it quantifiable and measure between male and female. Spending can further be classified as a continuous variable since it can take any number to a given unspecified amount. (c) Which summary measure(s) were used? Explain your answer The study used descriptive statistical summary. Descriptive statistics are used to describe the basic characteristics of the data in the study. They help in providing simple summaries about a sample of the study. Like how many agree and disagree, number male and female of the study. (d) Were the summary measure(s) used appropriately? Explain. Yes, they were appropriately used as they were able to bring out the objective of the study and capture the whole aspect. The study in question was merely to establish the willingness of either party to spend or not and by how much. (e) What is conveyed in this item, or is intended to be conveyed? The main objective of the study was to establish the behavior of men and women to spend on their partners and extend on which one is willing to spend on each other. From the findings of the study, it reveals that men are willing to spend more and the study went further to give the percentage difference between the two groups. I believe that the study achieved its objective and reported what it intended to report. It is the measure of central tendency in the data. The variables being mention in the above case are:- Sales Sales price Both sales and selling price are ratio scales as they are the ultimate nirvana when it comes to measurement scales because they tell us about the order, they tell us the exact value between units. We can accurately measure the sales unit price and the quantity of goods sold hence they qualified to be ratio scale. Both variables that is sales and sales price are both discrete data since they can be counted as opposed to being measured. Average in general means the sum of a list of numbers then divided by the number of numbers in the list. For instance, if the total sales are 15, then we are going to add total prices of the fifteen items sold then divide the total sum by fifteen for us to get average. Mode on the other hand can be described as the number which appear most in the list, for instance out of fifteen sales if the common item sold which appear may be three times, is 8, while the rest appear once, then 8 will be mode. Median is the middle sales out of the 15 total items sold. The number that appears in the middle. Lastly, mean is the average of the numbers: a calculated "central" value of a set of numbers. To calculate: Just add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are. (b) Consider a suburb (call it Brunswood) which had a 10% rise in median price from the June Quarter to the September quarter of 2010. (i) What do we know about the change in the maximum sale price for Brunswood? Over this period? Explain your answer. If we add or the median value increases with a constant value, both the maximum sales price in the same period will increase with the same amount. (ii) Sketch, on the same pair of axes, a graph for the June quarter prices and a graph for the September quarter prices. Label your axes. Explain It shows increase in sales from day one to day 12 and in September as a result of constant increase in sales, the graph is up showing total increase in sales in the month of September.
