Personal ment I am Laith Hammo, a Jordanian national, seeking admission for MSc Management, Organizations and Governorance in the London School of Economics and Political Science. I have an impeccable academic record and sufficient job experience that I am sure would qualify me for the course at your prestigious institution. I would like to furnish the following details about my education and work experience for your kind perusal. For my secondary education, I undertook IGCSE, awarded by the University of Cambridge. My results were commendable for this, with ‘A’ grade for five out of the six subjects I studied. The subjects for which I was awarded ‘A’ were Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Arabic as first language. Accordingly, I pursued my GCE Advanced-Level awarded by Edexcel Foundation – London Examinations. For this, I received ‘A’ for the three subjects I opted, namely, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. I was the top scorer with highest possible grades in class all through my school education and had received appraisals from my teachers. I have received two certificates of academic excellence during this time – one in the scholastic year 2001/2002 on completion of IGCSE studies and the other during GCE-A level studies at the end of the academic year 2001/2002. The second certificate comprised a prize equivalent to a half scholarship, which meant a 50% waive on school fees. I was acknowledged by my teachers and peers as someone with great potential to meet the academic and co-curricular activities, and I had very good linguistic and inter-personal skills. I opted the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire for my graduate studies, since IGCSE and GCE A-Level had prepared me for the UK education stream. I selected the course ‘B Eng Electronic and Communication Engineering’ which was a major highlight of the university. My solid base in Mathematics and physics, combined with my keen interest in electronics, technology and innovation had contributed a lot towards the selection and completion of the course. I joined the course in 2002 and graduated in 2005, with First Class Honours. I had been noted by the teachers in the University for the Outstanding Performance that I had exhibited from my school days. I scored 100% for Mathematics in the first year, 97% marks for Electronics 2 in the second year, 90% for Enterprise 1 in the second year and 91% for Communication Systems in the final year. The fact that I remained the top scorer with the highest possible scores all through the course, I was granted two awards on graduation – the ‘IEE Prize 2005’ by the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the ‘IEE Best Student Award 2005’ awarded jointly by the IEE and the University of Huddersfield. My overall average was 88%, which was the highest average, with score just below me 12% lesser. I was able to gain very good work experience related to my field of study in the most significant companies in my home country during the University Summer Vacations. I did work in 2003 as Trainee Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer at the US based consulting company WATCO Wireless which had an assignment in Jordan to design and build the network of the country’s newest mobile operator – Xpress Telecommunications. IN 2004, with my previous experience at WATCO, I was able to secure a 4 month assignment with Xpress Telecommunications as an Associated RF Engineer. I was fully committed to the job completed it successfully. After the completion of my graduation, Xpress took into consideration my outstanding results and the previous experience with them to offer me a direct appointment as Planning Engineer in Radio Frequency Engineering Department. I had realized during my tenure at Xpress that Engineering was not the optimum career path for me. Despite my excellent track record in academics and career, I realized the necessity to make use of my Engineering skills in other non-Engineering posts which called for a mix of Engineering background and Commercial/Business knowledge and skills. I had come across Commercial/Business personnel during my stint at Xpress and it was impossible for them to succeed in their Product Development and Innovation efforts and Sales and Marketing efforts due to their lack of technical/engineering background. It dawned on me that a judicious blend of knowledge from the concerned fields will prepare me for a much exciting career. My desire for a career change was met with success in January 2007 when I was offered a place as Project Manager in the Programme Management Office of a start-up/greenfield telecommunication operator, Itisaluna, which served Iraq with its headquarters in Jordan. This was instrumental to a major shift in my career, from Engineering to Project Management. My work here includes identifying projects within the programme, setting the project plans and schedules, monitoring progress and so on. When I joined Itisaluna, I was Employer number three, and the rest of the employees consisted only of the CEO and the Director of Programme Management. Even though the requirement of prior Project Management experience was not met by me, my superb academic records and my broad knowledge in telecommunications Industry prompted the Director to appoint me in the post. I had an innate desire to learn and succeed. This and my strong and positive character could have impressed the Director. I did succeed in the field of Project Management despite the lack of prior experience or learning in the field. Due to the lack of employees in Itisaluna, I had to work in various fields, including Finance, Procurement, Technical, Marketing, Regulatory, HR deployment plan setup, contract negotiations and conclusion, and so on. Since my work proved to be extremely successful in all these fields, my manager sent a recommendation to the CEO for a 70% increase in my salary. Realizing my potential for greater achievement in the, I invested my hard work on my career. However, I also realize the need to strengthen and reinforce my Management and Business skill set, and am planning to pursue the best education that would fulfill my goals. This has led me to apply for the Masters Course in management. I have gathered that the London School of Economics is ranked No.2 in the Management field in the UK by the Times Good University Guide. It is generally observed that it has top notch quality of education and is building on its reputation as one of the top business schools in Europe and in the world. My decision to apply for the ‘MSc Management, Organisations and Governorance’ course in the London School of Economics is based on the reasons mentioned above. I have also noticed that this is a new Management Programme, offered first in 2007 by the University. I realize that the course provides valuable exposure to key design issues and concepts in building organizations, from idea generation and set up, to launch and growth. It also offers to equip students with organizational behavior, corporate strategy, change management, management control, and global management. I was especially attracted to the course because it deals with ‘Innovation and Technology Management’ in one of its optional modules. I have an undying passion not only to become a successful manager in the near future, but also a successful leader and entrepreneur. I believe the course would prepare and equip me with the necessary knowledge, skills and practice to meet the challenges that my ambition is apt to raise. Read More
